A competition that mixed the great trees of Volunteer Park with the athletic skills, knowledge, and honed safety practices of arboreal experts filled the canopy of the Capitol Hill green space last weekend.
The Pacific Northwest Chapter of the International Society of Arboriculture held its regional tree climbing competition last Saturday. Michael Oxman, a local certified arborist, shared pictures and video from the competition and some information about the victors with CHS.
According to Oxman, the climbing was organized into five events that tested the skills of 30 men and four women climbers. “Besides speed and accuracy with ropes, a key criteria in determining our regional champions is grace while moving thru the canopy,” Oxman writes.
The winners will move on to the PNW finals to be held in Eugene in October. Good luck to men’s winner Noel Rod of Kent and women’s winner Alie O’Connor of Portland.
