UPDATE 8:20 AM: Snow started falling on Capitol Hill and across the Seattle area just after 8 AM with temperatures hovering around 33 F. For now, sticking mostly to parked cars, grass, and trees, the snow hasn’t yet completely snarled the morning commute. Metro reports “normal” operations at this time. Have pictures? Let us see.

Here are a couple CHS pages you might find useful this week:

The National Weather Service is warning Seattle-area commuters of what could be a messy Monday morning with snowfall predicted at elevations above 500 feet. Here is the NWS Winter Weather Advisory issued Sunday morning:

…WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 4 AM TO NOON PST MONDAY
MAINLY ABOVE 500 FEET…

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN SEATTLE HAS ISSUED A WINTER WEATHER
ADVISORY FOR SNOW…WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 4 AM TO NOON PST
MONDAY.

* TIMING…MONDAY MORNING BETWEEN 4 AM AND NOON.

* SNOW AMOUNTS…UP TO 2 INCHES MAINLY ABOVE 500 FEET.

* SNOW LEVELS…MAINLY NEAR 500 FEET.

* IMPACTS…HAZARDOUS DRIVING CONDITIONS ARE POSSIBLE DURING THE
MORNING COMMUTE ON MONDAY MAINLY ON THE HIGHER HILLS.

The NWS forecast predicts “wet snow” will continue overnight Sunday through Monday morning  before tapering off to “scattered showers” by noon. “Snow will be moderate to heavy at times,” apparently.

UPDATE: Wuh-whoa! Some forecasts pointing at a snowy Monday night.

Most of Capitol Hill falls below the 500-foot marker… but we’re close. Here are the highest points in the city according to an old SDOT list. You can see their list of steepest streets — many on the edges of Capitol Hill — here.

  1. High Point above sea level, 6 parcels south of watertower at 35th Ave SW and SW Myrtle Street – 520 feet – NAVD88
  2. Near Bitter Lake, on N 145th St just east of Greenwood Ave – 493 feet – NAVD88
  3. NE 92nd ST and Roosevelt Way NE – 466 feet – NAVD88
  4. Queen Anne Hill, at First Ave N and Lee Street – 456 feet – NAVD88
  5. Highest point in Volunteer Park – 453 feet – NAVD88

While this week’s predicted snow seems like it will be mostly a commuter annoyance, forecasters are talking possible bigger things blowing into the region next week. Bundle up. With the Pacific transitioning into its cold La Nina phase, weather models add up to a wetter, possibly snowier winter around the Pacific Northwest and a big change from recently mostly snow free years around Capitol Hill.
