2016 Capitol Hill summer outdoor movies start with samurai in Volunteer Park

We’ve already noted how busy the parks around Capitol Hill have been this week. It’s a sign of summer. An even truer sign of summer has also arrived — the first outdoor movie of the season on Capitol Hill.

Friday, the Seattle Asian Art Museum’s Gardner Center presents the first of three weeks of film and music at the Volunteer Park amphitheater with a screening of the “anti-samurai” piece Goyokin and music from blues duo Son Jack Jr. & Michael Wilde:

The rest of summer 2016’s outdoor films events around Capitol Hill are below. Included is the return of Three Dollar Bill’s annual series in Cal Anderson Park — this year’s theme? The Fierce Awakens! Codependent Lesbian Space Alien, Spaceballs, Barbarella, and Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy screen on Fridays in August.

Planning some (free!) outdoor movie action we’ve missed? Let us know or add it to the CHS Calendar 2016 Outdoor Movie Roster.

Hmm. Volunteer park selections are not exactly family and fun movies. I’m all for art house movies, but how about something fun like “How to Train Your dragon” ? Or, since I can only find three films, maybe I’m looking in the wrong place?

i think the films at sam were chosen based on a theme. this from their site:

“With the special exhibition Mood Indigo: Textiles from Around the World as inspiration, enjoy blues music and find indigo clothing and other textiles within these films.”

if you are looking for family/fun movies i suggest looking here – http://www.regmovies.com/Movies/Summer-Movie-Express

Thanks for the tip. They are cheap, but they’re not outdoors. All in regular movie theaters.

I actually find it refreshing that Three Dollar Bill Cinema and SAAM choose movies that are not your standard outdoor movie fare. You can find lots of mainstream, family-friendly movies all over this town during the summer. Westlake, Magnuson Park, Seattle Center, West Seattle, Beacon Hill, etc. all show recent popular ones that are fun for all ages. I think The Stranger has a guide to these.

Me? I’ll be under the stars for “Rain the Color of Blue with a Little Red in It” “Codependent Lesbian Space Alien” and “Barbarella.” Those sound like a hoot!
