- Pepper spraying at Denny Overpass: Four victims were reported pepper sprayed under the Denny Way overpass at 5:10 PM on Sunday, June 12. SPD responded to a call about “an unknown male who was described as average height, olive skin, shaved head and tattoos around his head” assaulting the group under the overpass; the assailant is reported to have said “Thanks for getting me jumped” prior to pepper spraying the victims. SPD arrived on the scene and advised victims on caring for their injuries:
- Oasis Tea Zone burgled: At approximately 12:30 PM on Thursday, June 16, police responded to a call about a break-in at The Oasis Tea Zone on the 600 block of E Pine. The manager of the shop told police that he believed an unknown person had broken into the shop sometime between the hours of 1 to 8 AM on Thursday morning. The unknown suspect broke into the business, pried open the key lock box, took cash from the register, and stole a change jar. There were no witnesses and the police have no suspect description and no current leads.
- Woman threatens, throws coffee at Starbucks staff: A woman verbally and physically assaulted staff and refused to leave the premises of the Starbucks on the 800 block of E Pike. On the evening of Monday, June 6, an officer was dispatched to respond to a call about an intoxicated woman refusing to leave the Starbucks and threatening to kill the staff; no weapons were seen. The woman had been in the Starbucks earlier that afternoon and had returned in the evening and asked to use the restroom, then began arguing with the barista and told him “I’m going to fucking kill you!” The barista escorted her out, at which point she threw her coffee cup at him and tried to force her way back into the Starbucks; the barista blocked the door with his body. The assailant was then taken into police custody. From the police report:
- Man steals purses from office complex, leaves behind paperwork: On the morning of Tuesday, June 7, a man reportedly stole purses from an office complex on Pike. The suspect was captured on video and appeared to be a 5’11” black male with short hair wearing a white button up shirt with palm trees, black shorts, and grey Nike sneakers. Two women said their purses had been stolen. One victim was missing a large tan purse with rhinestones, pay stubs and insurance information, two paychecks and a Juicy Couture perfume. The other victim was missing a tan purse, her bus card, and her lunch. According to the police report, the suspect left behind a bag of makeup supplies, a box of paperwork, and a pair of boots. Those items were submitted into evidence.
- Man tries to break into apartment with hubcap: At 3 AM on Tuesday, June 7, a man reportedly tried to force entry into a woman’s apartment on the 1300 block of E Union using a hubcap. The victim heard a noise outside her window and, upon investigation, saw the suspect trying to force entry into her apartment. The victim told police that she grabbed the hubcap and pushed it back out of the window. The suspect then left the scene. According to the police report, other tenants in the building said the the suspect had been trying to force entry into their apartments and causing a disturbance by pounding on doors in the complex.
- Man spits on employee: A man threatened to pepper spray an employee in a store on Broadway on Thursday, June 2 in the early afternoon. The man was yelling at another shop employee because he believed he was being unfairly watched for shoplifting, calling the employee a “white supremist,” according to the police report. The victim, a store manager, approached and tried to ease the situation, at which point the suspect threatened him with pepper spray and told him to “shut the fuck up.” The victim asked him to leave and the suspect refused, then swung his fist at the victim and spit in the victim’s eye. The suspect then left, but not before grabbing a can of deodorant from the store and throwing it at the victim and the other shop employee.
- Man jumps through window with two bottles of liquor: On the morning of Thursday, June 2, a witness reported seeing a man jump through a broken window of a business in the 200 block of Broadway E with two bottles of liquor. Police responded to the call and talked with the King County Metro Deputy who had pursued the suspect, “a black male wearing dark clothing carrying two bottles of unknown alcohol.” The reporting metro deputy and his partner pursued the suspect on foot but lost him around the intersection of E Thomas and Harvard Ave E. The responding officers searched the area but did not find the suspect.
- UPDATE — SPD investigating shooting: Police are investigating after a man was shot Friday morning near 12th and Jackson:
Police are investigating the circumstances that led to a 25-year-old man being shot in the arm and back after an early morning disturbance near the Jackson Street overpass. The man’s injuries are not life-threatening. Officers responded to two separate 911 calls of a disturbance involving men fighting in the area of 10th and South Jackson and 12th and South Jackson around 6:40 am. One of the callers indicated that a white Suburban had fled the scene. Officers located the Suburban at 10th and S. King and interviewed the driver. He stated that he witnessed the disturbance, attempted to break it up, and then left when the fighting parties left. The driver was identified and released. Shortly after the driver was released, another 911 call reported a man down in the 500 block of Dearborn. The victim had been shot in the arm and back (non-life-threatening) and was treated by Seattle Fire. He was later transported to Harborview Medical Center. People at that location told officers that they believed the man had been shot near the Jackson Street overpass. Officers located several shell casings on Jackson Street. Officers continue to investigate.
Employees of business in the Pike/Pine area have to put up with so much crap. We should all go out of our way to be kind to them to balance things out.
