Shop the Hill: World Beads keeping DIY jewelers and Capitol Hill crafters happy one tiny treasure at a time

The name World Beads doesn’t do justice to what’s actually inside the storefront on Broadway. Sure, there’s a dizzying array of beads, semi-precious stones, and sparkly Swarovski crystals, but also behind the counter is a knowledgeable and crafty staff ready to help complete your next creation or readily offer their jewelry repair services.

“I think what makes us successful is our hands on approach to our customers,” said Melissa Ludin. “Helping nurture their creativity and passing on our knowledge of crafting,” she said.

Shop the Hill Spotlight:

Since the 1990s, the boutique has featured beads from all around the world. The small bead shop has established itself in the community of capitol-hill crafters and DIY jewelers, a place where designers can stop by for supplies like wire, chains, and charms.

“We hope that in turn, people come and support our business and we can stay put despite the changing neighborhood,” said Ludin. “Rent gets higher and it’s harder to stay afloat when your items cost 15 cents!” Continue reading

Reminder: Seattle Marathon runners mean Sunday is a good day to walk around Capitol Hill

IMG_2620It’s a little embarrassing that we reduce 26.2 miles of physical challenge into a traffic alert but, well, the Seattle Marathon will close a lot of streets as it loops around and through Capitol Hill Sunday. Every year, some people are surprised by it. Don’t be some people.

More information on the route and timing (basically, all day) here. We like to watch from Interlaken, by the way.

Police say man brought ‘arsenal’ to Seattle Ferguson protest

A 31-year-old Covington man faces weapons charges after police say he brought an “arsenal” of guns and explosive fireworks to Monday night’s Ferguson protest that included a night of peaceful rallies and marches across downtown Seattle and Capitol Hill before clashes with police around I-5. From SPD:

A bystander alerted police to a suspicious man Monday and reported seeing him handling a road flare during a well-attended demonstration. Officers contacted the man, who told police he was carrying a loaded handgun, despite not having a concealed weapons permit. Police then discovered the man was also carrying a 7-inch knife in his backpack, and had a box of ammunition, an assault rifle, a shotgun, and a box full of large fireworks in his car.

Jeffrey Acord has been charged in Seattle Municipal Court for having a concealed firearm without a permit, carrying a “dangerous knife,” and possession of fireworks. Acord was released from jail Thursday night after posting $10,000 bail, according to King County Jail records. Continue reading

The Central District harvesters of Alleycat Acres plant seed of idea for neighborhood pocket farms

IMG_4078IMG_4092The plan for developers Lake Union Partners to build a second mixed-use apartment project at 23rd and Union means change and some amount of displacement. But the farmers of the Alleycat Acres land at 22nd and Union, a patch of neighborhood farmland maintained by community members, seem ready for change.

“Our understanding and agreement with the developer is that they want us to stay there till the last responsible moment,” said Fisher Qua, farm coordinator of the space at 22nd and Union, told CHS. “They want the site to be active till they bring the bulldozer.”

The farm at 22nd and Union has been in existence since 2010 and has helped the community come together to produce and build relationships as well as fresh produce. The farm has yielded a variety of crops like potatoes, beans, garlic, flowers and northwest plants. Whatever is harvested is shared amongst the community members and then whatever is left is then donated to the community partners. Leftovers are often shared with various food banks and preschools and the farm in the past has even partnered up with the YWCA. Continue reading

Why is it important for people to shop local, especially around the holidays? Your money really does mean more for the business, go further for the business, and stay closer to the neighborhood and local economy when you shop small. Many of us rely on this season to carry us through slower times; supporting small businesses in your neighborhood keeps them alive and keeps the Hill varied, interesting, and a fun place to be.

Why is it important for people to shop local, especially around the holidays? Smart money supports your own neighborhood first. Spending money at large, corporate entities only helps finance the destruction of independent, creative businesses. Capitol Hill is lucky to have a TON of wonderful, innovative and independent businesses – support them all!
