UNFOLD. REFINE. SERVE.

sya-logo“Every good teacher knows that her love for the subject is what gives her an ability to pass it on creatively to others. Responding to her love with heart and mind together, she so enlivens the subject that she creates a transmission that is alive and authentic.”  -Helen M. Luke

A great yoga teacher brings to her students both the fire of her intellect and the warmth of her heart. Upon the scaffolding of knowledge, she places her life experiences, the effects of her practices, and the ongoing fruits of her self-investigations. At a certain point in a yoga teacher’s career, she is ready to learn to become both disciplined in her daily life and softly trusting of the subtle and unique voice that is moving through her alone. She knows enough basics about technique, history, and theory that she can now begin to access her own sources of insight and intuition and to see how they resonate (or not) with what comes her way from the outside world.

Seattle Yoga Arts’ 300-Hour Advanced Yoga Teacher Training will begin in January 2014 . This training is about maturing as a yoga teacher and as a person. A strong emphasis will be on individual responsibility for learning, self-activating, and pursuing your particular passions as a teacher. You will be encouraged and supported in honoring and bringing forward your unique gifts and talents.

The world so much needs what you alone can offer.

This year offers:

EXCEPTIONAL TEACHERS – Learn from four core faculty who are among the most experienced and respected in their fields in Seattle. Learn from adjunct faculty who are outstanding in their fields of psychology, Ayurveda, anatomy, kinesthetics, specialty yoga, therapeutics, Sanskrit and more. Be mentored by one of our core faculty.

COMMITMENT TO OWNING YOUR OWN TALENTS – Commit to daily stillness, through a meditation or contemplation form of your own choosing, as a source of creativity and insight, and to inform your teaching. Be challenged to stay genuine as a yoga teacher. Connect with a like-minded group of yoga nerds who love investigating the topics you love! Discover and courageously bring forward your particular gifts as a teacher. Keep a year-long journal of practice and insight. Understand the importance of silence, solitude and contemplation for yoga teachers. Learn how to live like a yogi in the midst of contemporary America. Define and own your particular dharma as a yoga teacher and a person.

ADVANCED TEACHING TECHNIQUES – Deeply refine your understanding of effective principles of yoga movement. Our principles of movement are based on Anusara yoga, and enhanced by study with anatomists and physical therapists. Learn how to cue refined alignment based on the focus pose or class of poses. Learn to teach effectively to all populations of yoga students, from beginning to advanced, prenatal, therapeutics, restoratives, gentle and more. Understand and learn to apply the potency of progressive teaching. Receive advanced tutorials on each category of poses. Learn how to sequence and teach more advanced asana. Refine your verbal and manual adjustment skills. Learn to solidly bring meaning and context to your classes so your students (and you yourself!) are inspired to stay with their practice. Take your understanding of anatomy that is applicable to yoga asana to a deeper level. Learn how to own the seat of the teacher with confidence and ease. Integrate subtle body knowledge, such as pranayama, meditation, chanting, chakras, doshas. Regular peer teaching and practicums, receiving teaching feedback from your peers and teachers. Class observation and assisting a core faculty.

OPPORTUNITIES TO SERVE – Complete a seva project bringing yoga to marginalized or underserved populations.

DEPTH OF PHILOSOPHY – Study and up-level your understanding of some of the basic texts of yoga: The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and The Bhagavad Gita Learn more about Tantric philosophy and practices through studying the Siva Sutras, the Spandakarika, and the Vijnanabhairava Tantra. Understand the basics of Sanskrit. And much, much, much more, some of which will only evolve as we gather together and see what we create as individual souls, and as a group, on this great investigation called yoga.

WHY STUDY WITH US? All our core faculty were trained in Anusara yoga, and understand that method deeply, while also honoring and sourcing the best from the fields of physical therapy, kinesiology, therapeutics, etc. SYA has a commitment to including the stream of Tantric teaching in their philosophy, while also continually revisiting the root texts of the yoga tradition.

Being a yoga teacher is an honor, a privilege and a never-ending path of growth and service. The teachers at SYA have seen, over and over, that yoga changes lives, and know that being part of that evolution is sacred.

We have trained some of the most beloved teachers in Seattle and beyond. Seattle Yoga Arts has been known as a studio of depth and excellence in teaching since it opened in 1993. Our core faculty are among some of the most respected teachers in the Northwest. We’ve had the time and experience to refine our Teacher Training program; we’ve weeded out what isn’t valuable, and brought in concepts that truly enhance your training.

“The connections made by good teachers are held not in their methods but in their hearts, meaning heart as the place where intellect, emotion and spirit converge. We do not merely find a subject to teach—the subject also finds us.”  -Parker Palmer

THIS TRAINING WILL EARN YOU CERTIFICATION THROUGH YOGA ALLIANCE AT THE 500 HOUR LEVEL, IF YOU HAVE PREVIOUSLY COMPLETED A 200 HOUR TRAINING.

Please visit the Seattle Yoga Arts website for additional information, application, fees, dates, and a list of the core faculty leading the training.
