- Frat party gunfire: SPD has provided the preliminary report following a gunfire incident outside a Friday night fraternity party on 22nd Ave E that confirms the details CHS gathered this weekend and adds more information about how the disturbance broke out on a relatively quiet eastern Capitol Hill street. A CHS commenter who said she was in attendance at the party provided this account:
… it was a dry party though that does not excuse the violence. It was all UW students, everyone needed a student id to get in (even though we got a close friend in by narrowing another friends id so it wasn’t THAT strict) it was just too many people in a small hot area. Literally hundreds of students in a fairly regular sized house. It was hot and you couldn’t walk without basically grinding on the person next to you. More than likely it was people that already had background and being in that small area together made things worse. Quality advise to anyone planning on partying: if you feel like you need to bring a gun to a party; you shouldn’t be going to a party.
The new details from the SPD report on the near-midnight shots fired incident are below:As one CHS commenter put it, “Small parties from now on please.”
- Package thieves: Neighbors living around 15th and 16th Ave reported mail thefts in the area last week. Here’s one report sent to CHS — along with a note for the thieves:
I live in the Melmar Apts and on Oct 3, I had mail packages, valued at over $500 stolen from the lobby between around 3pm and when I got home at 11 pm. The Melmar is a locked building but someone gained access to the lobby and stole my packages.
The Postal Inspector and SPD have been notified and the management is also aware. To the thieves, I say “Thanks a lot, assholes.”
- Armed robbery report: There are no available details yet on a gunpoint robbery reported to have occurred in the 700 block of Belmont Ave E early Sunday morning around 2:30 AM but that wasn’t reported to police until Sunday evening. We will update when we learn more from SPD about the incident. UPDATE: A woman told police she was robbed at gunpoint around 2:30 AM as she walked on Belmont Ave E Sunday morning:
Taken in the rip-off was the woman’s distinctive wrist wallet filled with various bank cards, IDs and all of $1 in cash. The North Seattle victim told police she did not immediately report the robbery because she was intoxicated and “panicked due to anxiety.” Last week, CHS reported on a woman robbed by a cab driver who picked her up on Capitol Hill who also said she was afraid to call police because she had been drunk at the time of the hold-up. Police told that victim “she shouldn’t have to be fearful or taken advantage of when being responsible.” This weekend’s case is currently listed as “inactive” until police get more evidence to work with. - Boren/Union burglary report: A CHS community post details a break-in at the Bolero Condominiums at Boren/Union and includes images of the alleged burglar.
- Pike/Pine brawl: We’re still sorting out any injuries or arrests associated with this large brawl that broke out along E Pike early Sunday morning around 1:30 AM that was captured on video and posted online over the weekend. At least one person was arrested. A 36-year-old man was booked for investigation of assault in the case.

14th ave (and mercer) also experienced mail thefts in mid September. It was also a locked lobby. Any relation?
I live in a secure buliding also. However, I use a UPS store box for my Amazon/online deliveries ($20/month). For me, it’s a small price to pay not to deal with the hassle of stolen packages.
