With mayoral candidates and Seattle-based LGBTQ pundit Dan Savage among those waving signs, flags and inviting drivers-by to honk, more than 200 protesters converged Tuesday afternoon on the Madison Park home that serves as the Russian Consular Residence at 3726 E Madison. The rally joins a wave of protest focused on ongoing human rights issues in Russia involving intolerance, hate and violence against LGBTQ people. Protests in Seattle have included rallies and an ongoing vodka boycott.

Gay Leaders and Allies Call for Worldwide “Global Speak Out” Events on Eve of G20 Summit Meeting in Russia
(Seattle, WA – August 27, 2013) – Seattle lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) activists and allies will hold a peaceful demonstration supporting LGBT human rights in Russia and demanding repeal of Russia’s anti-gay laws on Tuesday, September 3rd at 4:30 p.m. The event is one of many “Global Speak Out” events being held worldwide that day and is timed to occur one day before western leaders meet with President Vladimir Putin at the G20 Summit in St. Petersburg, Russia.
Potential event activities include: sidewalk chalking, musical performances of pieces by historic gay Russian composers, decorating area with rainbow streamers and flags, demonstrations with signs to passing drivers, message delivery to the Consul General, and participant interviews with media
PARTICIPANTS: Bring signs, rainbow flags, wear light blue (traditional color most associated with LGBT in Russia). Protest will remain on sidewalks adjacent to building, not on street.
