Blotter | Safeway liquor boost bust, phone mugging at 19th/Howell

East Precinct robbery detectives have seen an uptick in cases this week but, fortunately, nothing as serious as last Sunday’s early morning gunpoint robbery — and arrest —  we reported on here.

  • Liquor boost ends in arrests: A Friday night incident at the 23rd/Madison Safeway is a good example of the thievery underway in recent days. A man and woman duo were busted after deploying pepper spray in a failed getaway attempt after allegedly attempting to steal more than $500 in booze:

Shortly after 10:00 pm last night, store security working inside the Safeway store in the 2200 Block of East Madison Street saw a man walk out of the store without paying for over $500 worth of alcohol.  The two store security employees approached the man as he was putting the alcohol into a waiting car, and identified themselves as security.  The male suspect punched and bit  the security officers, while the suspect’s female accomplice, waiting in the car, jumped out and sprayed the security officers with pepper spray. With the assistance of other witnesses, the store security officers were able to get handcuffs on the male suspect.   East Precinct officers arrived  and arrested both suspects.

The two store security officers were treated at the scene by Seattle Fire for injuries that included pepper spray exposure and bite marks.  The two suspects were transported to the Robbery Unit office, where they were interviewed by detectives.  After being interviewed, the two suspects, both age 22, were booked into the King County Jail for Investigation of Robbery.   This remains an active and on-going robbery investigation.

  • Group grabs victim’s phone: A man was reportedly “held from behind by four black males in their mid to late teens” in a phone robbery late Tuesday night near 19th and E Howell. According to the report on the incident the victim wasn’t going to call police until his girlfriend intervened because he didn’t believe officer “could do anything to get it back.” By the time officers searched the area, the suspects had disappeared. The victim was not injured in the incident.
  • More: Detectives are looking at additional reported robberies in the area including a mugging at 14th/Union reported last Saturday and an eat-and-run on 15th Ave E in addition to the 14th and Howell gun incident earlier this week and the above-mentioned 19/Howell rip-off.

Add to this apparently a string of minor burglaries yesterday. My friend’s apt was entered (thru an open window) and about half his DVDs taken (including “It Might Get Loud.” Bastards!) and a few other easy to carry items. Cops told him they had seen about 1/2 dozen similar burglaries already that day. It’s hot out, but maybe it’s better to leave those windows blocked

Thanks for the comment. Here’s the flurry of reported residential burglaries from the last 24 hours

Seriouly – this shit is getting out of control around here! Can someone put it in perspective for me, or has Capitol Hill really gone to shit? I dont think we can even blame “the bad economy” anymore.

Probably about the same as always given similar conditions; which would be really hot and a lot of windows open. We get these runs of crime every now and then. Many of these streaks are by the same person or people and eventually their luck runs out.

My perspective is 30 years living on the hill. Since the 1980’s this hood is generally safer.

This is a great time to remember that I left my window open while I’m at work. (Crosses fingers)

Was the booze worth $500 before or after tax?
