This weekend marks the 7th year of Translations: The Seattle Transgender Film Festival. Translations is presented by Capitol Hill’s own Three Dollar Bill Cinema, an organization that provides information about and for the LGBT community through film that has been operating in Seattle for the past 17 years. Check the listings for the event which is held at The Northwest Film Forum, SIFF Cinema at the Uptown and Solo. CHS is a proud community sponsor.

In addition to Translations, CHS has a list of events popping up around our part of Seattle this weekend. The Broadway Farmers market is back in action from 11AM – 3PM on the Hill. A few First Thursday events have trickled onto the calendar, and of course, Cinco de Mayo. Have something to add? Let us know on the free CHS Calendar.

CHS spoke with Rachael Brister of Three Dollar Bill Cinema about this year’s Translations. She suggested checking out the following northwest film premieres:

Saturday 5/5 at 7:15 / NW Film Forum / I Stand Corrected / “The world of jazz musicians has typically been a boys’ club, homophobic at best. So what happens when a transwoman breaks in?” – Three Dollar Bill Cinema

Sunday 5/6 at 7:15 / NW Film Forum / Facing Mirrors / “The first narrative film from Iran to feature a transgender main character, FACING MIRRORS is a story of an unlikely and daring friendship that develops despite social norms and traditional beliefs ,” says Three Dollar Bill Cinema.

While Translations does require that submissions include film content of interest to the transgender community, the festival itself encourages everyone to participate. Translations has caught on in Seattle and there are plans to expand its territory as a film festival. Brister notes that for its first few years, Translations received primarily documentary submissions. Today, she says filmmakers are expanding to create narratives, short films and more. Tickets are $50 for a festival pass, $11 opening night, $9 single, $7 for single tickets for Three Dollar Bill Cinema Members, youth and seniors.  Learn more here

Where are the transqueer vegan dubstep taco trucks? This city is literally like living in a hillbilly stone age- LITERALLY!
