Hill Style is one of CHS’s longest running features. Over the years, Dana has learned to keep things simple in sharing her Capitol Hill street finds from her fashion site It’s My Darlin’. In the early days, there was more commentary but that just seemed to bring out the worst in the CHS comment crowd. Now, Dana rarely tells you what to think about the fashion finds she shares. It has become a series of snapshots of interesting people wearing interesting clothes on Capitol Hill. Just the way we like it. Here are the top ten Hill Style images from 2011 ranked by reader views. It’s probably not the most artful way to consider fashion. But we like that, too. The images below run in order of total views — we’ll let you guess whether it’s a countdown or a count-up.
Hill Style 2011 Top 10
(images are linked to their original 2011 post) Happy (almost) 2012 and thanks Dana for a stylish 2011.
Looks like Dana has a thing for rolled up jeans.
That, and tights with short, almost-can’t-tell-you’re-wearing-them skirts.
…who the heck is Dana? Every person here?
The first pic is indeed fashion. The others, not so impressed. The guy is total passe, maybe 3-4 years.
They look like very friendly people, well dressed in their own way. Is that fashion?
I’ve kinda always thought that too but didn’t want to say anything snarky (hey, first time for everything…). They all look like delightful people and they’re certainly presentable, but I guess the “fashion” aspect has always been lost on me.
Also an obsession with flamboyant fur and leather on nearly every post… it’s bizarre because she raves about vegan restaurants on her blog. She needs to spend a half hour looking at YouTube videos of fur and leather factories.
Agreed. Everyone looks like a friendly, nice person. The fashion element is lost on me too – they look like they could have been anyone pulled off the street.
This part of the blog seems like such a misfit to me, because unlike every other feature, it tells you something that you already know if you spend 5 minutes on Capitol Hill. People dress like this. OK. That’s cool.
The rest of the blog is great for filling in residents on the inside scoop, about businesses, crime, community activities, history of buildings, and so forth that would actually be very hard to devote the time and energy to figure out on your own.
If you want to see amazing photos of street style, check out the man who invented photographing it, Bill Cunningham. Check out the documentary Bill Cunningham New York. To start with, his photos are never posed. They show the clothes in motion. Much more dynamic and interesting. Also, he includes people of all ages, not just the under 30 crowd spitting out the latest Urban Outfitter trend. Study up Dana.
I am a fan of Dana’s blog. I like it for a multitude of reasons, and one of those reasons is the comments she gets when she posts on this site. I LOVE it! One, no one can wrap their brains around the difference between fashion and style. The feature is entitled “Hill Style”, however, no one has time to read the title when there is a snarky comment burning a hole their pocket. Style is intangible, and her blog simply provides a few of the many examples available in our beloved neighborhood. Thank you for all you do Dana and never-mind the internet trolls, I hope you are as entertained by them as I am. As Hemingway said, “critics watch a battle from a high place, and then come down to shoot the survivors”.
Great feedback…..Uh… there is someone that can do it better. Practice makes perfect. Bill Cunningham is over 80 years old, that is quite a bit of practice. Zoinks people. Zoinks.
one thing that each of these photos (and the people in them) lacks is discernment. both in fashion and style.
maybe i’m missing the point. yes, the hill is known for it’s ‘self congratulatory post ironic banality’ aesthetic, but seriously, this is the best dana could scrounge?
couldn’t find one skinny tattoo’d dyke w/ a side mullet or one of the hundreds of delicious dandy’s running around the hill?
or would that ruin the frump look seattle is famous for?
and out of 11 models, only one of them is not white. wtf?
way to keep that bar of expectation as low as possible.
