A literary center for the neighborhood, the city and the region, Capitol Hill’s Richard Hugo House has opened its search for a new leader. Last spring, Sue Joerger, former executive director of the nonprofit, announced she would be resigning her post effective July 1.
Hugo House has posted a call for a new executive director. The deadline is October 31:
An exciting opportunity has opened up at Richard Hugo House! We are looking for an Executive Director with a love of literature; fund raising and management experience; and knowledge of nonprofit organizations.
Hugo House has operated on 11th Ave since 1997. It provides classes and events for writers as well as hosting residencies and collections and providing grants.
Joerger left the House on more stable economic footing than when she took the job in 2009. Saying the nonprofit was “in the black” in 2010 for the first time in five years. Joerger wrote:
Managing a nonprofit in these economic times is challenging. How do you meet the ever growing and changing needs of writers, while experiencing significant reductions in funding from all sectors including donors, foundations, government and corporations? How do you keep classes affordable and provide enough scholarships to meet the growing need? And, how do you provide access to Hugo House when you can no longer afford a facility manager?
