After a decade of work by its dedicated community, one of the tucked-away landmarks of Capitol Hill is getting some tender, love and care — and a nice upgrade. Capitol Hill’s Greek Orthodox Church of the Assumption has started work to create a new community hall adjoining its house of worship.

Church representative Peter Argeres from the building committee tells us that the plan calls for an expanded community hall on the existing foundation with a new kitchen, new bathrooms, upstairs offices and lower level class and dance spaces. No parking will be lost in the expansion. The work is the result of more than 10 years of fundraising for the parishioners as the group raised more than $2 million for the project as well as taking on a $1.5 million loan to complete the work.

Contractor on the project is JTM.

The project should be completed in February 2012 and have the same look and feel as the old hall — but with a little more life thanks to landscaping upgrades and fresh white stucco. Church members hope to begin renting the hall out to the public again after it’s complete — the hall has also been used for various Hill community meetings in the past. There’s also a possibility that the parish might again be able to hold its spring festival again in coming years thanks to the new space.
