New monthly dinner on Capitol Hill for low income families needs volunteers

Union Gospel Mission and Capitol Hill Presbyterian Church are teaming up to provide free Sunday night dinners to low income families and they’re looking for volunteers to help. Details on the new initiative and how you can get involved, below.

Many homeless and low income families and individuals call Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood their home. With food costs rising over 8 percent and government food benefits cutting back 50 percent, many more people will go hungry. That is why Seattle’s Union Gospel Mission and Capitol Hill Presbyterian Church added a monthly dinner every second Sunday of the month. The monthly meals begin Sunday, July 10th, 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

“The needs in our community are great and partnering with churches like Capitol Hill Presbyterian Church is one way we are expanding services to meet those needs,” said Jeff Lilley, president of the Mission. “We are working hard to be the light of the city for those struggling in desperate need.”

Volunteers will be needed on a monthly basis. If anyone would like to volunteer, please contact the Mission’s volunteer office at 206.723.0767 or [email protected].

Capitol Hill Presbyterian Church Meal Schedule:
1729 Harvard Avenue, near Seattle Central Community College
July 10th and every second Sunday thereafter
3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

I don’t believe in making people pray to ‘qualify’ for free food. Do we know if religion is required to help the families or if the church is merely the setting?
