Unbeknownst to most of us, June 11th was a day of passion and intrigue around the world, as those in-the-know celebrated the First Annual International Yarn Bombing Day. Capitol Hill was not immune to this exothermic reaction as several instances of Yarn Bombing were observed around the hill, specifically on the corner of 17th Ave. E. and E. Prospect.
Wefts and warps, wales and courses, several different knitting techniques insinuated themselves into the landscape, causing shock and awe around the neighborhood.
Was this a terrorist act or merely the result of rogue knitters prowling the neighborhood, intent on leaving their signature upon the street? Like dogs pausing at a hydrant just long enough to leave their mark, these silent and anonymous knitters left a visage of their presence in the form of knitted delight.
The piece de resistance, the magnum opus of the day, was this wonderful planter cozy wrapped around an old cedar planter on a stump. This outstanding accomplishment of knitting and purling brightens up the entire streetscape and rather than scaring the citizenry, had the opposite effect instead, and delighted all those who observed this unique form of fuzzy terrorism.
Thank you, anonymous yarn artist, for Yarn Bombing our neighborhood. Hope we see you next year!
Well it is World Wide Knit in Public Week so I’m not too surprised. Love the planter cozy! http://www.wwkipday.com/
North end of the park at least was bombed.
I haven’t picked out new frames to go with my new eyeglasses prescription yet. I thought the headline said something about a YAM bombing. :/
