Another break-in reported as man arrested near Capitol Hill burglary hotspot awaits charges

No charges have been filed yet against the man arrested last week when a wary neighbor held him at gunpoint after finding the man lurking in the shadows behind homes in an area of the Hill recently hit in a string of burglaries. The 30-year-old remains in jail as prosecutors consider charges. There is no information at this time linking him the string of home burglaries in the area east of Volunteer Park in which a particularly brazen burglar went to work seemingly unconcerned that people were home and sleeping inside.

This much is clear — the suspect, in jail since early Wednesday morning, is not responsible for the latest break-in reported in the area Friday morning in the 1500 block of E Republican. Few details on the crime are available yet from SPD but we received a note about it from a concerned neighbor. It’s a good reminder of a bad thing. Burglaries are a regular occurrence — jailed suspect or no.

As for that suspect, he is being held on the trespassing investigation and a warrant for a failure to appear on another charge of trespass from July 2010. If he is the person responsible for the recent break-ins, it would represent quite a change for the 30-year-old. According to state and county records, the man has had many run-ins with the law but the closest he has come to burglary was a 2007 theft charge that involved rolling up a big ball of clothes at Nordstrom’s downtown and trying to make a getaway. His most recent trespass charge is for sleeping inside the Odd Fellows building. The man does have felony warrants for his arrest from California and from Oregon for meth.

The week before last our alley mailbox was left tellingly open, with no mail inside. A few days later a neighbor a couple blocks away found some of our opened mail in her yard. We don’t think they got anything of significance.

We are in the process in installing a secure mailbox now.

The crooks are on a roll.
