Still no answers in Lewis murder as detectives look for new clues

Two weeks later and we still don’t know how Zachary Lewis ended up beaten and left in an empty lot on Capitol Hill. But East Precinct operations lead Lt. Joel Guay says that’s not because the department isn’t continuing to work to solve the case. “We understand that it is a terrible crime,” Guay said, “‘Did you forget about us?’ somebody might ask. The answer is no.”

Guay said there is no new information to provide following the department’s plea for help in the investigation and release of a picture of Lewis on Tuesday. Guay said detectives would like to talk to more possible witnesses. Anybody with information is encouraged to call the Seattle Police Homicide Unit at (206) 684-5550.

Another possible source of new information will be the results of DNA and forensic testing that should be available to detectives working the case soon. Evidence collected from the empty lot at Federal and Republican where Lewis’s body was found could yield important clues to what occurred in the early morning hours of March 6 and, possibly, help identify who is responsible.

In the meantime, Guay said he has heard from people living in the area that are concerned about the lack of information. “We acknowledge that people are wanting to know more,” Guay said. “The nature of a homicide investigation can mean we don’t know things for a long time.”

I wish SPD had been this forthcoming two days, instead of two weeks, after the fact. Thanks for staying on top of this.

Lab results, DNA, etc., take weeks, sometimes months to return a result. Or, years, if the perpetrator isn’t in the DNA database YET. Mia Zapata’s killer is a prime example. The police may very well have a usable DNA sample, but may not have a match for weeks, months or years. What are they supposed to do in the meantime, endlessly show their hand, so to speak, to the perp for the sake of keeping the public informed? Sometimes good police work involves NOT blabbing everything you do or don’t know immediately.

It doesn’t take that long on CSI (Pick your city).
