Happy Endings: A new place to shop for old things on East Madison

It’s a good story. She’s rocked with Pearl Jam and put her style to work as a part owner of Via Tribunali. Now Peggy Curtis is just getting started on Happy Endings.

Her new design and furniture shop on East Madison has filled a long-empty former janitorial supply store with sofas, lamps and bar ware. Just up Madison from Piecora’s, Happy Endings seeks to find happy homes for its one-of-a-kind treasures.

The new store is owned by Curtis, who opened for business just two weeks ago.  Although she was still waiting for her business cards and sign to be delivered when CHS stopped by, there is a lit “Open” sign in the window surrounded by items from her collection and her two pooches who hold down the fort. Despite having no sign or marketing yet, Curtis says she already receives a good number of drop-in customers, and many of the pieces currently on display have already been sold.  She says the neighborhood seems happy to see the old retail space come back to life with a local business.

Nearly everything in the store is part of Curtis’ large personal collection which she says she has been adding to since she was a little girl.  The back half of the store is curtained off and houses box upon box of even more stuff, all of which had been in storage until recently.  The collection can best be described as eclectic, with a mix of antiques and modern pieces, although Curtis says she likes antiques as “they never go out of style and never lose value.”

Curtis says continues to add to her collection by shopping for more used furniture items several times a week. She does consignment, but, please, by appointment only.

Originally from Alberta, Canada, Curtis has been living in Seattle since the 1980s and has dipped her feet in an array of local business ventures.  As the former wife of the band manager for Pearl Jam, she was heavily involved in the local music scene, at one time running a catering service for bands. Today, she is a part owner of the Via Tribunali pizza chain and used her interior design skills to style the walls of the Belltown location.

Happy Endings is open for business Tuesday through Saturday from noon to 6 PM at 1409 East Madison. You can learn more at http://www.happyendings.me/

RIP That’s Atomic. Not really legendary, but certainly a Capitol Hill staple for many years.

I’m so sad to hear that That’s Atomic is shutting its doors. I had a hunch that it wouldn’t be long after they downsized, so I’m glad to have them around for as long as we did thereafter. I adore the couple that runs the shop and have spent many afternoons and evenings lingering to chat post-purchase. I wish them both the best!
