Slog’s Dominic Holden serves up a big ol scoop of delicious and affordable Capitol Hill food news. Thai Curry Simple is coming to Capitol Hill:
…The former Barista Boyz coffee stand on 12th and Madison will be converted into a Thai hut of to-go awesomeness. “We got the lease signed last week and are working on fixing up the place and putting things together,” owner and chef Picha Pinkaow writes in an email.
Holden reports that the Capitol Hill location for TCS will be all veggie and should be open by November. But there’s more going on here.
First, depending on where you fall in the savory-sweet continuum and in the Pike/Pine-has-enough-sweets continuum, you’ll either regret or celebrate knowing the former coffee shack was also coveted at one point by an entrepreneur with a walk-up waffle concept. That deal never happened.
Second, the development process is about to get serious for the 1111 East Union project. Paperwork has begun on the demolition applications for the Undre Arms Apartments and the process to relocate the 11 tenants that currently call the building home is in its earliest phases. We’re not sure how the project’s work will impact the new food stand and the Cobra Lounge that has also made a home on the parcel of land that is planned to someday hold a 6-story mixed use building. It’s possible that landowner Patrick Berschauer of Berschauer Phillips Construction Company and developer Lorig Associates will knock down the Undre Arms and never find the proper financial conditions to move ahead with the 1111 East Union building. In the meantime, there will be a new cheap eats option in the neighborhood, if only for a while.
Thai Curry Simple is the best $5 you can spend on lunch in the city. They’re the #1 place I miss since my work group moved out of Chinatown. I wish them all the best with the new take-out stand!
We need more waffles and less Thai.
Agreed.
Since when is Lorig the developer here? This is new info…do you know when they got involved and why? We have heard that Runberg is no longer the architect…surprised to hear of new leases on a site that is supposedly about to be developed…
We need more <$10 food options and less upscale trendy crap. So hooray for Thai Curry Simple!
Another Thai place…. I’m so excited…. (or am I?)
This town needs someone who knows how to make killer soup & sandwiches on the cheap, not another Thai joint. And I like Thai food. I guess the NYC sandwich wizards spoiled me.
point me to the delicious waffles, near or far!
