As many of you know, the great jazz saxophonist Hadley Caliman passed away this Wednesday. He was a beautiful player, an inspiring teacher, and a loving husband, father, and friend. Many people within the music community and beyond are mourning this loss.

The memorial service will be held this Saturday, September 18th at Seattle First Baptist Church on Capitol Hill. It is open to the public, so please come help us remember and pay tribute to Hadley Caliman.

After the service, the musical memorial will continue at Tula’s on 2nd in Belltown, featuring Hadley’s original music, played by his own excellent band.

The Hadley Caliman Memorial Scholarship Fund, through Cornish College of the Arts, is accepting donations in his name.

Please feel free to re-post this event to your page, and invite anyone who knew and loved Hadley Caliman.

Caliman died last week at the age of 78. His memorial begins at 11 AM.

In his comment on the Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra blog’s post announcing Caliman’s death, Patrick Mouton of Capitol Hill’s the Electric Tea Garden recounted a time he spoke with the jazzman:

I remember meeting Hadley at a jazz gig back in the early ’90s. I was impressed at how he was so open to talk and share his knowledge about jazz music and culture. I think I impressed him when I had heard of and still had copies of several experimental jazz recordings he made in the 1970′s. Hadley was one of the good ones…a gentleman, musician, and worldly scholar; he will be truly missed.

Rest in peace.
