Forget Shark Week. This week on Capitol Hill offers a bill of policy-oriented community meetings thick enough for your friendly neighborhood wonks to really sink their teeth into.
Tuesday night from 6 to 8 at the Century Ballroom in Odd fellows Hall will be your chance to influence the design of the recently announced farmers market public square at the future light rail site. Sound Transit, the City of Seattle, and the TOD Champion, a partnership of the Capitol Hill Community Council and Chamber of Commerce, have organized the event as an opportunity for members of the Capitol Hill community to engage in determining what the square looks like, particularly on those days when the market is not open for business.
The Capitol Hill Community Council has re-organized its former Policy and Planning Committee into separate Transportation and Land Use Committees, with each holding its inaugural meeting this week. The Transportation Committee will meet Monday night from 7 to 9 at Roy Street Coffee and Tea and will discuss the Community Council’s Complete Streetcar Campaign, as well as potential future work on the upcoming Transit Master Plan, Bike Master Plan Update, and any on-street parking and traffic issues. The Land Use Committee will meet Thursday night, also from 7 to 9 at Roy Street Coffee and Tea, and will review the ideas generated at Tuesday night’s meeting about the public square and seek out additional suggestions that may not have been captured. Moving forward, the Land Use Committee will tackle development issues in the neighborhood, including what ultimately gets built at the future light rail site. Discussions at this and future Land Use Committee meetings will directly inform the work of the TOD Champion.
Full disclosure: MRK, a.k.a Mike Kent, currently serves as vice president of the Community Council.
…. bring your two cents to the table about what you’d like to see happen on the new public square proposed for the redevelopment above our light rail station. Plan to come before or after you go to your block party.
