The business district on 10th Ave E is not having the best summer. A successful bistro pulled up stakes and left the neighborhood for Broadway, a less successful restaurant has thrown in the towel and the street’s long-time watering hole faces an uncertain future. But there are glimmers of hope. We reported last week on the soon-to-be-opened diner set to replace the space TidBit Bistro left behind in its move to Broadway. The Roanoke Tavern has made it through the summer and might be able to work out a deal to stay. Through it all, Cafe Dharwin remains.
Owner Dharmendra Seddaiah and your reporter. Seddaiah didn’t want to appear in a picture alone.
If you’ve ever trekked to the very north end of Capitol Hill, you wlll find a small colony of businesses. Unless you live around the area or commute through the scenic back road, you might never encounter this underdog space. It’s an area that has been tough on good — but not good enough — businesses. My personal favorite establishments like Cellar Bistro (home of the best gnocchi in town), failed to endure the dwindling economy despite support from local fans.
For six years, Dharmendra Seddaiah has been serving Caffe Vita espresso and assorted pastries from Mighty-O Donuts and Le Fournil to a habitual set of customers. Cafe Dharwin’s loyal followers range from Seattle Prep students to morning commuters on their daily 10th avenue route, with regular visits from surrounding residents and establishments. They come to Cafe Dharwin not only for coffee but also to mingle with neighbors. This quaint hole in the wall is the social mecca for the colony of north Capitol Hill-ites, serving as the liaison to making connections.
This effect all seems natural once I asked Dharmendra how he began his dharwinian journey. We connected somewhat instantly once I learned he was once a fellow Microsoftie, and started to discuss the life of corporate culture. He shed light into his technical background (geeks unite!), his decision to create his own venture with a simple mantra, and how he ironically moved away from the complicated world of computers and the like. I don’t blame him.
This explains the basic and charming character of Cafe Dharwin. Behind the artistry of espresso making and colorful paintings on the walls, you can count on this place to give you a cup of what everyone needs in our complex world: simplicity. It’s helped Dharwin survive — if not thrive — as its business neighbors have come and gone.
UPDATE by jseattle: No confirmation from Dharwin, but Hate to break it to you’s comment below appears to be spot on. Cafe Dharwin is for sale. Here’s the listing on Craigslist. Now, just because a business is up for sale doesn’t mean it’s going anywhere, anytime soon. Here are a few examples recently that were put up for sale — Rosebud, for example, is still open and still operated by the same owner.

Dharmendra and his staff are awesome and they make the best mocha in Seattle
But this cafe has been for sale for a while now… Current price is $30k (not sure what that $30k gets you).
Hello,
the cafe is actually not for sale anymore. Please ignore the advertisement in this blog. I am asking the writer of this blog to remove that information as soon as possible
