Elliott Bay Cafe set to open this week. Tomorrow. Maybe.

It looks like Elliott Bay Book Co.’s cafe component will be open for business on Thursday. Or Friday. After waiting weeks since the book store opened its doors and celebrated its grand opening in April, what’s another day? This sign hung by staff shared the news in the cafe on Wednesday where readers were already camped out putting the space to use.

Elliott Bay Cafe, unlike its enveloping retail sibling, left something behind in Pioneer Square where the original EBC still operates. Its opening means a return to active duty for Tamara Murphy who has had her hands full with this lawsuit against the Melrose Market developers and the closing of her Brasa restaurant in Belltown.

Murphy’s Pioneer Square location offers breakfast and lunch with a menu of baked goods, sandwiches, salads and soups. We expect a similar recipe at what they’re calling EBC2. Expect some overlap with nearby Oddfellows‘ offerings but when CHS talked to Linda Derschang about her new neighbor, she said she wasn’t concerned about the competition.

“I like the idea,” Derschang told us about Elliott Bay as a whole back in January. “The readings and the people that will come for the readings. As a fan of a good bookstore, I’m thrilled it will be in a neighborhood I love.”

The service, food and prices at Oddfellows are awful across the board. Apparently a tattoo and an attitude is all you need to land a server job there. I’m telling everyone I know not to eat at Oddfellows after giving them countless chances at redemption. Bring on EBC and hopefully a decent lunch option in the neighborhood.

Same experience for me as well.

Whatever. I eat and drink (and work) at Oddfellows all the time. It’s a great neighborhood hangout and it’s always full so you two aren’t missed.

Some of you people think you are eating at Georges V, or Chez Maxime.

Not.

Like the place, like the mood, food is so so, help is great, good coffee.

I was there today for a meeting and I’ve always found the service to be exceptional. The staff are friendly and attentive. I’m suprised by a complaint about the staff, I’ve never had a bad experiance with the staff. And I’ve always found the menu quite tasty…

If you are representative of all workers at Oddfellows I feel sorry for Linda. I’m sure she would appreciate you representing her company by commenting on a blog telling customers to go elsewhere.

I think you misunderstand my post – the good service I’m talking about is from Oddfellows. I’ve loved the place since day 1.

And I’m thrilled that Tamara Murphy is moving in next door – she brought new life to the EBC downtown and it’s great that she’ll be on the Hill.

— you are a joke. I’m not an employee. I’m one of the laptop crew that you would see in most of Capitol Hill during the day if you were ever really here.

Oh, now I understand. Your one of those fake hipsters with too tight skinny jeans which makes you irritable and no job that sits in a coffee shop and gets free wi-fi all day taking up space for paying customers.

Customers seem to decide that their barista or server is rude without evaluating themselves as customers. Maybe it’s not that your server was rude and too cool, but that you were a shitty customer. When you walk into a place and someone says “How are you?” or “How’s it going” and you respond with “Table for two” or “Tall latte”, you’re a shitty customer. Think about it, wieners.

Most baristas don’t actually say “hello”, “how are you?”, or any other greeting even if you initiate. They also don’t say “thank you.”

Don’t blame the customer!

If you think like this you are a shitty barista/server. Now you are the wiener with no tip.

By wiener with no tip do you mean a penis with no head? Or a barista with no cash tip? Just checking.

Obviously, a lot people in the service industry are jerks. I wasn’t saying that the customer is always to blame. But a lot of the time the customer starts things off rudely. It goes both ways that’s all. Wiener.

I’ll let you figure out whether I meant the former or the latter.

No, it doesn’t go both ways. The customer is always the customer. You don’t get a free license to act any way you want especially if you are an employee representing someone eles’s business.

If you say “hi” to customer and they say “table for 2” suck it up and get them a table. The vast majority of customers aren’t like that. You are not Miss Manners so move on. Your job is to meet their needs and that is what you are getting paid to do.
