Capitol Hill Garage Sale Day 2010

UPDATE: Thanks so much for a great sale day, all. Fun times. Here’s a write-up on the day from Suzi. Scroll to the bottom for a photo set from StatonD. Plus, thanks to MvB for the photos up top. More coverage, live from the community lot, below. Got a cool pic? Send it in. [email protected]

This is it. The big day is here. Watch this post for coverage of the third annual Capitol Hill Community Garage Sale http://capitolhillgaragesale.com. Sales start at 10 AM. I’ll be headquartered at the People’s Parking Lot community site at Belmont and Pine for most of the day so stop by and say hi. I’ll have printed garage sale maps (but please consider printing your own map and share with a friend or four), CHS crow buttons to give away and a few CHS shirts you’ll have to earn! See something cool? Send me a Tweet @jseattle or call/text (206) 399-5959. I’m lame with the Twitter hashtag thing so lemme know what works. Maybe #chgsd? Thanks so much to Emerson Salon for sponsoring the community lot.

Didn’t buy anything, but was fun – this kind of stuff helps with the sense of community. Nice running into you, jseattle!

Found a full set of Star Trek Pez dispensers – unopened! With a free t-shirt as a bonus prize! Then had to buy a bag to put them in. :) Missed out on the crow buttons. Didn’t even see them. *sad face*

I was a little disappointed with the turnout. I thought the PPL would be packed with folks wanting to get rid of their extra stuff, something more akin to Shipwreck Day in Anacortes.

you’re right in saying the turnout wasn’t huge, but it was fairly steady throughout the day and lots of people went home with good finds. the real question is, for me at least, how do we get more people to come out, especially when operating with an almost non-existent budget? we don’t have the SLOG broadcasting and recommending what we do here, especially not ahead of time; fliers are expensive and don’t last long.

we’re talking about possibly doing this again later in the summer, maybe august. any ideas, from anyone, about how to get the message out and attract sales?

Yes we want a bunch of fucking pro antique dealers. Good call. No good deed goes unpunished. What an asshole.

Oh, jeez. Not my favorite comment thread. The number of sales in the lot was pretty much the same as last year. It would be cool to squeeze a few more in but I think the community space is off to a good start. It’s the 2nd year for the space (3rd year for sale over all). Don’t think Slog, etc. has much to do with it. Being organized by a very small group doing it mostly for fun does. But not making excuses for it. I thought Saturday was a big success and it definitely gave me the energy to do it again.

Thanks for putting the sale together. We sold (or gave away…) almost all of our stuff and made enough money to go out on a big date. Whew! Plus, we met lots of neighbors. That’s my favorite part. That and being out in the sunshine.

The interesting part for us this year was the # of professional book buyers/sellers, mostly charmingly gray-haired men with handheld devices scanning our books. The third guy that came by was so bummed he’d been scooped.

I went to Garage Sale Day.

Things that would help for next year.

1. Posters. Yes, they are expensive, but even a dozen up and down Pike/Pine would have let people know (that don’t *sad* read the CHS blog what was going on)

2. Better maps. We tried to find some of the sales and couldn’t. Goodle maps rocks sometimes, and sometimes it’s just off. Make a map where people hand-draw the location of their house.

3. Include more of Cap. Hill. I live in North Capitol Hill and would have been a part of this but our house wasn’t even on the map!

Otherwise, what a great idea and it was fun walking around trying to find stuff.

But yeah, there was a lot of “crap” and some of the prices were ridiculous, but hey, that’s how garageSailing goes!

Cheers.

The Gables Co-op turns 100 this year! One way we celebrate being part of Capitol Hill for a century is participating in CH’s Awesome Annual Garage Sale. Please help: Who knows the date for 2011?
