Like working with plywood? Red your color? Light rail ‘call for artists’ deadline

For those of you who see 10-foot plywood walls and think, “That’s a perfect canvas for my art!”, take note that Monday is the deadline to submit your application to be part of the “roster of artists” contributing work to the light rail construction wall art project being led by D.K. Pan. Info on applying below. We reported last week that Pan has decided the wall’s base color will red signifying Broadway as the “heart” of the city. Here’s how to include your work in the project:

Artist Opportunity

Create long-term temporary installations for the plywood construction sound wall surrounding Sound Transit’s light rail construction site in Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood. The Sound Transit Art Program (STart) would like to encourage literary, conceptual, architecture-based works that deal with interpretations of site and ‘spirit of place.’ STart encourages all types of artists to apply, including 2-D, writing, and history. Limited 3-D art opportunities exist.

The intention is to turn the construction wall into a giant community canvas that evolves and changes overtime like the neighborhood itself.

Roster/Pool

Qualified artists will be included in a Wall Project Roster, which will be used to award on-going art opportunities. Some artists will receive installations immediately, while other art opportunities will be defined over time, and rolled out in the future to keep the Wall fresh and interesting. The artists selected for the Wall Project Roster will have the potential to receive projects in the future.

Project Goal

Make the fence surrounding a block of the Broadway neighborhood active, interesting and relevant during the multi-year construction period with art that engages the residents and visitors of the dense urban neighborhood.

Project Budget

Budgets range $500 – $5,000 per project

Eligibility

Open call to professional artists residing in Washington Station, Oregon and British Columbia.  Sound transit staff members, selection panel members, project personnel and immediate family family members of all of the above are not eligible to apply.

Application Deadline

Monday, April 19th, 2010 at 5:00 pm, Pacific Time.
NOTE: This is a submission deadline, not a postmark deadline.  Materials must be received at Sound Transit by this time.

Project Description

Multiple artists are sought who can be available to create work immediately and also who will be called on over the next few years to create additional art for the Wall while it is up through 2014. Sound Transit is seeking a variety of artists as diverse as the Capitol Hill neighborhood itself.

  • ARTISTS: with an engaging idea waiting for a location and the Wall would be a great place to try it out.
  • SCALE: Projects may vary in scale from a few square feet to hundreds of square feet.
  • 2-D ARTISTS sought to create large artworks on the 24 feet high section of the wall along 10th Avenue – an architectural corridor — with more intimate expressions along Broadway and John.
  • WRITERS: The Wall Project is a rare opportunity for writers to work in the public realm, as well as 2-D artists. The Sound Transit Art Program is interested in mounting some text-based projects on the wall face, as well as the web site. An effort will be made to share stories and the written-word gathered for the Wall Project beyond the life of the Wall itself.
  • TIMELINE: A portion of the Wall will be designated a Capitol Hill timeline, serving as a visual framework for small installations. Milestones that have made the history books will be noted, as well as stories that should be history and the neighborhood’s own urban legends. Artists with an interest to work with history are encouraged to apply.
  • COLLABORATORS: who are willing to be a partner designer with a community group or classroom that has an idea they want to express but who needs an artist’s help to pull it off.

How much you wanna bet that the same people who trash utility poles won’t trash the wall with club posters?

This is an important project – why the close deadlines – who knows.

The project will span 3-4 years …. hurry, hurry, hurry. Insane logic.

For all the creative people out there –APPLY, damn it!!!

I suspect if you do not put your idea on the table now, it will not be in the pile. Even sketchy maybe ideas, get them in the mix.

APPLY, damn it!!!

Trashing poles is free speech, so ruled the Supreme Court, sorry, not trash. Called information in the public space. Or do you alone own the poles?
