Woman robbed at gunpoint on Summit

UPDATE: SPD says no arrest in Monday night gunpoint street robbery — Plus, 3 more March muggings

Original report:
A woman told police she was robbed of her purse and cellphone at gunpoint late Monday night as she walked alone near Summit and Union, according to police radio reports.

The 911 call reporting the attack came in from a friend of the woman who was robbed. The caller told police she had been talking to the woman when she heard a man tell the woman to get off the phone or he would shoot her. Police found the woman who provided a description of the man who had held her up. According to the radio reports, the man is described as a black male around 6-foot tall in his late teens or early 20s. The woman said the man was wearing a white bandanna on his head at the time of the attack.

A 911 call came in shortly after the reported robbery alerting SPD to some sort of disturbance at an apartment building near 18th and E. Howell. It was not clear from the radio reports what the connection between the apartment building and the Summit robbery was but at least one person was detained. We received a note on Facebook about the scene:

Not sure exactly what is going down, but there are 10-15 cop cars making a bust at a house down the street fromy apt. Just arrested one person and I assume there will be more arrests coming soon!

According to SPD radio updates, at least one person was taken into custody. Meanwhile, there was also a report that a silver, semi-automatic handgun had been recovered either at the robbery scene or from the apartment building. We’ll update if more information comes in tonight and will clarify details with SPD in the morning.

We reported last week that robbery on the Hill jumped to eleven incidents in March — up from eight in February and seven in January. CHS has also found out about at least three more March street robberies. More on those soon.

I must say that as cool as I thought it was to live on Capitol Hill, I’m so glad that I moved away from there. Crime is on the rise and will continue to do so as the weather gets nicer and more people are out and about. Be careful out there.

Glad you and your negative attitude are gone.

Crime is on the rise and will continue to do so until the economy is better and people aren’t desperate enough to rob people or depressed enough to go out and drown their sorrows and make foolish decisions about their safety.

Some things you can do to make it safer:
– Be aware of your surroundings. Walk with your chin up, not with a chip on your shoulder, but like you have a right to be there.
– Avoid walking alone late at night, or letting friends do the same, especially if you or they have been drinking.
– Avoid confrontations with strangers. If someone tries to start something with you, get away from the situation.
– If something happens, call 911 immediately.
– When you get a bad feeling about something, listen to that. Don’t just push it down and soldier on.
– Finally, don’t let fear rule your life and keep you from going out or even moving away from this awesome neighborhood.

on the economy and desperation. This gunpoint robbery is a scary thing to a lot of people. So, “Um, no”, maybe you should adjust your attitude. OP was just throwing a comment out there, and even ended it w/ a kind warning.

It happened at 10:30PM as she left work at a hospital, the person they arrested was not the person who robbed her.

these stories are really sad. My daughter and her friend were mugged in broad daylight last Friday at Silver Lake park. They were shoved and yelled at and then the thugs grabbed an ipod her friend had in his pocket and ran off. The cops caught up with 3 of the 5 teen gang members but let them go when they would not provide information on the gang member who actually made off with the ipod. What the heck is up with that?
