Vi Bacchus closes

When we reported on Genki Sushi, the conveyor belt sushi place that will be housed in the Broadway Building, a month ago, CHS commenter zeebleoop wondered whether Vi Bacchus was still open, since he had not seen anyone in there in a while.  Well, it’s official – thanks to tipster @benjammin509, we can confirm that Vi Bacchus has in fact closed.

A shout out to our commenters like zeebleoop and tipsters like benjammin509, CHS could not keep up with the stories happening in the hood without you. If you ever have news or information we should know about, you can reach us at [email protected] or on the newsline at (206) 659-1919.

Any ideas on what the neighborhood needs in that space?

This place easily had the highest quality sushi on the hill.

Agreed. Their happy hour was great. So sad.

Went there in December for a friend’s birthday. Service was slow (one guy doing everything but cooking) but we enjoyed it and their katsu was to die for. Pity they’re gone.

i never got a chance to try it myself, mostly because of the lukewarm review from the stranger. personally i’m not one for heavily sauced sushi but it seems like there was interest in the place; just not enough.

looks like, from the pic, that the space is being leased as restaurant space. but i’d rather see a nice, old-fashioned sort of general store there; something like what blackbird opened in ballard with “the field house”.

Sounds interesting, how are the prices with the concept “general store”? If it’s cheap, sturdy stuff being sold, I’m for it. Otherwise, it’s another (albeit cleverly marketed) boutique I can’t afford to shop at on a regular basis.

I figured this article from 1.5 years ago was the end of them.

That would be Hana, which is doing just fine.

The quality at Vi Bacchus was way more consistently excellent than Hana or Aoki and the prices were great, especially during happy hour. I tried to go there for dinner on Friday night with a group of friends and found the place dark. Capitol Hill has plenty of mediocre sushi; this place was different and it will be missed.

I’ll also miss Vi Bacchus – I always enjoyed eating there. That said, “I Love Wasabi” has quickly become my favorite sushi place on the hill. Their fish is always more fresh than Hana or Aoki.

It really was the best quality sushi on the hill and they were the only Izakaya place. Beef tataki – thin sliced, almost raw, and the sauce cooked it slightly. Avocado tempura fried. Nine slabs of sashimi, almost a half inch thick and 2 1/2 x 3 inches. All under $8 at happy hour and still reasonable the rest of the time. The sake happy hour was great too — maybe 20 different types from $6 – $18 half price! I’m recounting these things from memory, but I tried to get the word out. I think one of their only errors was that their wacky Americanized combination rolls were too expensive for most people and unfortunately that’s what a lot of people judge sushi on around here. Vi Baccus’ were pricey enough to discourage that.
Regardless, the owners were nice and tried really hard.
