The Schools First campaign is declaring victory for the two school levies on the February special election ballot:
Schools First Campaign Celebrates Campaign Victory; Thanks Seattle Voters for Renewing Commitment to Schools
Seattle – Mayor McGinn, SPS Board Members, Schools First campaign team and school supporters gathered at the campaign headquarters burst into cheers when election results were posted showing Props 1 & 2 with a wide lead. As of 8:15 when King County Elections posted the first results Prop 1, the Capital Levy, had received 71.38% of the vote and Prop 2, the Operations Levy, had received 71.82%. Speaking to a packed crowd Schools First President, Betty Hoagland said, “On behalf of Schools First I would like to thank Seattle voters for their overwhelming support of our schools. These levies are a critical source of funding for the basic education needs of our students and health and safety of our schools. By voting Yes! on Props 1 & 2 Seattle voters are renewing their commitment to our 46,000 public schools kids. We all won tonight!”
Mayor McGinn, who attended the event after coaching his daughter’s basketball team, told the crowd, “This is a great victory for our kids. I was grateful to be given an Honorary Co-Chair by the campaign and I did my part, but I know this is a result of all the people in the room tonight. This win shows that kids do come first!”
