Ever since the Fargonian Coffeehouse closed, I have felt the lack of a neighborhood coffeehouse in Miller Park (admittedly there’s Fuel but I like to have options). About a month ago, Cafe Char opened shop a few doors southwest of where the Fargonian was and the Bottleneck Lounge is. Here is a small description from Charnita Baseden, the proprietress and often the barista:
Cafe Char is family owned and its purpose is to provide a comfortable and inviting atmosphere for the neighborhood to relax, get away, socialize and even entertain with a good cup of coffee or whatever is their choice of drink. Our focus is espresso but we have a variety of beverages such as teas, smoothies, lemonade, italian soda and bottled beverages. We also provide pastries, fresh baked cookies and breakfast quiche. We are also up for comments and suggestions on how to better your neighborhood’s coffee shop.
They have just started up (the art was not yet on the wall when I walked in a couple of days ago). I’m excited to have them in the neighborhood – especially since they have free Wi-Fi.
I too was pleased to see Cafe Char open. Having missed the Fargonian since it’s departure a couple years ago and then Starbucks’ closing at 22nd & Madison last year.
I am back in my daily coffee trip routine thanks to Char.
I’m proud of you sis!
This local barista is HOT!!! You GO GIRL!!!
I enjoy the their assortment of refreshments and its a cool place to stay and eat.
Once you test Cafe Char’s coffee you will never go back to your regular coffee shop, I did not. I almost tried every thing they carry and I loved all of them.
Neat little gem in the middle of Madison.Great addition to the neighborhood. The coffee was amazing, the quiche yummy… and the service outstanding. You got to check out this place!

Great vibes.. great coffee.. what more could you ask for? Chocolate chip cookies of course! You have to try one,, they’re delicious!
We have been walking to 15th ave and even to Broadway looking for the cafe that makes coffee the way we like, has a great space, nice people, good food etc… Many are nice but none exactly do it for us.
Then Cafe Char opened just 2 blocks away from us. It is warm and friendly. The coffee is perfect and the food so far has been delicious (quiche and breakfast sandwich).
Please let everyone know about this great cafe so that they can thrive and we can continue to enjoy their great coffee and space.
I had a shortened version of the coffee ceremony at a friend’s house in Addis. I was excited when I read in the Seattle Times that Cafe Char is opening an Ethiopian Shop with a ceremony. I look forward to the experience. I introduced my pastor to Ethiopian food. Now I will be able to introduce him to Ethiopian Coffee and the ceremony.
Thanks!
