A few days ago I posed a question to a runner, “How many Obama signs do you think are on your running route?” The answer: 30, possibly 31, on a 4 mile Fancy/Miller/CD run. Some micro-analysis proved to be more interesting, though, since a few blocks had more concentrated yard signage than others. This made me wonder: “Which 1 block stretch on Capitol Hill has the highest number of visible Obama signs?”
A few rules:
- The sign can be in the yard, in a window, etc, but it must be visible from the sidewalk.
- Bumper stickers on cars don’t count.
- Multiple signs at a single dwelling unit count separately.
So CHSers, which block is it?
(To be fair, we can use these same rules to ask: “Does any 1 block stretch of Capitol Hill have a McCain sign?”)
I was just telling my wife last night I have no idea what a McCain sign or bumper sticker looks like since I have yet to see one here. I almost feel bad for the fella’. Ok not really.
If this competition is measuring the absolute number of signs on a block, then short blocks are at a disadvantage to long blocks. It might be worth having a second criteria with the number of houses with an Obama sign expressed as a percentage of the total number of houses on that block.
For example, if we have three out of the four houses on our street with Obama signs does that get us any credit?
I just got back from visiting my uncle in tennessee. I saw ONE Obama sign amongst countless McCain signs. Not only that, but for some reason, next to each McCain sign was an additional sign that said “KEEP YOUR EYES ON JESUS”. It’s funny how I live in the Seattle bubble where I kind of think to myself, “of course we’re going to win this election- I never hear anyone say ANYTHING good about the bad guys”… but it was a bit frightening to see so many bad guy signs in one spot. I should have expected it, but it still kind of scared me.
We’ll go per capita on this!
We should also hand out bonus points for those oddly beautiful portrait Obama signs that make him look like Abraham Lincoln or George Washington.
Troof. I had to look at a red/blue state map to remind myself we are very much in the minority.
At least we’re safe here–for now. As of last night, the Obama bath bomb (chocolate & vanilla) was outselling the McCain one (candy cain and
Palinplain) two to one at Bliss Soaps. But the owner’s got a shipment of mini glasses and lips for the red ones on the way, which may skew things some . . .Just because everyone you know agrees with you does not necessarily mean you’re right. You might just need to know more people.

You mean “criterion”. Criteria is the plural form of the noun and therefore not used with the singular article.
