Googling a bit off some overheard info that it was an art gallery and having a party, Cairo has a MySpace, a blog, and is an interesting new addition to the neighborhood.
Cairo is a forum for creative inquiry and exposure, showcasing visual arts, design, performance, sound, film, and artist-in-residence opportunities. We renegotiate the traditional relationships between artist and institution in partnership with our visiting artists, and, in the process, create an ever-evolving arts space open to all kinds of circumstance.
Cairo is a gallery, a boutique, and a working artist’s studio. In addition to our ongoing arts exhibitions, always available in the gallery are independent arts publications, emerging artist flat-files, and our own collection of unique Cairo apparel.
They’re also having a party this Friday Saturday. Whoops
when I still lived over there, it was this odd little artist space-shop. can’t remember the name. maybe it didn’t have one. I remember a nice guy. and a very cute kitty that would hang out front a lot and steal ear scratches from passing neighbors. they always put cool stuff in the windows.
It’s looked pretty much like that for a while. An old storefront with papered over windows, and no hint as to what was going on within.
Sure, but what was it *before* that. What was the store?
Is this place attached to building next door, No Space? I once bought a t-shirt there, although it was very complicated because they were only open for a few minutes every week.
What is No Space? I walk past there almost everyday and I’ve seen people inside maybe once or twice, but they don’t seem to be doing anything in particular. I’ve been wishing something would move in to these spaces, so I’m glad to see it happen!
Rumors I’ve heard say that No Space is an “art space” owned by a trust fund kid who lives in the back room (the papered over soon-to-be Cairo, apparently, so I guess that’s bad information) and never does anything noteworthy.
The noteworthy thing is kind of untrue, since I totally loved that weird paper tree house thing with all the stuff hanging from it?
This place is half a block from where we live, I pass it every time I walk to QFC.
Cairo is a gallery/store from Joel, who owns 20Twenty in Ballard, and his special lady-friend.
I remember about 5 years ago this building use to be the “headquarters” for a small zine called “Minty” that use to profile the DJ/Electronic scene in Seattle, as well as record reviews, performer reviews, etc.. Small format zine. Prob measured about 4.25″ x 5.5″. I think it was around for maybe a year before it folded
Before No Space there was a Cool Art Couple who lived there with their dogs and art. They had an old Volvo and a red 60’s car that they parked between the sidewalk and the building. I miss them. Anyone know where they are now?
And a friend said that spot used to be a laundromat back in the 80’s. And maybe a video store.
