Bumping this oldie but goodie up given the gorgeous weather (originally posted 7/20/06)
To accompany our guide to finding a cool, refreshing body of water around these parts, here’s a list of local frozen-type treats. No swimming until 30 minutes after you’re done eating, kids.
- Gelato at Vios — we think they’re open again
- Soft-serve at Tully’s at 19th and Aloha — if Vios ain’t open
- The Good Orange at Fuel Coffee on 19th — believe it or not, ice + orange juice + soy milk = goodness
- A missile pop from the ghetto-ass ice cream truck that cruises the hood — Listen for “Turkey in the Straw” and grab your quarters
- Scoop Du Jour down in Madison Valley land — but do we have to walk?!?!
Anything you know about that we missed? Share!

You didn’t miss it — I was just going to second the Tully’s option. Their mango smoothie is mangolicious! I see they are willing to add a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an extra $1, but I haven’t felt thin enough for that yet.
ghetto ass truck is right. those ritzy folk over in sandpoint and such tell me their ice cream man is named “Jolly Joe.” I tell them that our guy is Ghetto Steve. But some part of me feels nostalgic and proud about that truck.
Scoop Du Jour is in Madison Park, not Valley, BTW. Great place, though, especially after a swim in the lake in the summer
Pagliacci’s on Broadway has a small selection of Gelato. If I want something cold though I usually just go to QFC and buy a bag of frozen blueberries….
Dick’s. Cones, sundaes, root beer floats!
What does “ghetto ass” mean… is it that he is a middle-aged black guy who talks in an African-American type of dialect?
That seems perfectly normal to me… it seems racist to call him “ghetto ass” (as this blog has repeatedly done).
You know, the nappy headed guy :-)
Yup, Scoop du Jour is undoubtedly Madison Park. However, many so-called “Madison Park” establishments like Nishino are also undoubtedly Madison Valley, so props for at least trying to make the distinction (unlike most people, much to the chagrin of us Parkers).
In a related story, many don’t know that the Scoop also serves food, including what some say is the best burger in Seattle. Random fact of the day, yes?
There’s a chocolate store across the street from Nashino in that little strip mall that sells fancy ice cream sundae’s in the summer. They are really tasty.
DILETTANTE chocolate on broadway has some awesome sundaes.
