Our part of Capitol Hill goes pretty much ape shit decorating houses for Halloween. We’re a little more reserved when it comes to Christmas/Hanukkah/Kwanzaa lights. We decided to put up a stylish strand or seven at our house — but I’m already feeling guilt.
Yes, electricity is cheap. At 50 watts per string X 7 strings X 7 hours operation per night X 25 days, we’re talking 61 or so KWH burned — that’ll cost me about $2.50 at 4.06¢/KWH. It’s more about adding waste to the system which already seems to be wasting plenty without my little holiday display. Guilt mitigators include the less b-yootiful LED lights or some hippie dippie solar lights.
In the meantime, I guess I’ll adjust the automatic timer to shut off an hour earlier. That will knock 40¢ off my guilt bill.

Whew! I was feeling guilty too. Check out this video from a friend of a friend in Woodinville: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2x6wHaspS4E
We should all aspire to such artistry. At least if your spouse will let you use multi-colored lights :).
