first off Paul, if you click on my username I have my picture, my name and my website all there in my profile, I'm not trying to be anonymous. I just happen to have a dumb username on this site that I made when I had no idea I'd be writing/ making videos for the site.

I'll let Justin speak for himself on the headline... but no, I'm not 'ashamed' of myself for it, it's clearly tongue in cheek.

Not sure what your point is about your conversation with Kris. It sounds like you guys had a constructive conversation, but I don't see what that has to do with this post.

As for your claim that I went in and "wound him up" and pulled out only the most controversial parts... that's just not true, and you have no way of knowing either of those things since you weren't at the interview and can't see what I cut from it. Sure, I did pull some of his more controversial points, and I cut out a lot of other stuff, I pulled the points that I found to be interesting... it's called EDITING. I do it, you do it, all your co-workers at the Stranger do it. Not sure why you're surprised about this. Trust me, if I wanted to make Kris look bad, I could've gone down a very different path.

But thanks for riding over on your high horse and checking out CHS!

RE: Another view
Being able to see a piece of art through a gallery window is not the same as this situation. This art is not just visible from public space, it IS public space. It is literally a part of the public right of way, since it is a part of the sidewalk. I guess I can't really blame the artist for protecting his copyright, but I really don't like the idea of anyone, artists or corporations owning a copyright on a public space.

Still can't decide!
I'm always shocked when towards the end of an election there's still "undecided voters", but somehow after observing this debate for months and months I'm still undecided on this. At this point, I'm leaning towards Broadway or Boren because I really think that since this project was created to serve First Hill, it should stay in First Hill.

Someone on STB brought up the idea of keeping the streetcar in First Hill, and moving some bus service to 12th... that seems pretty fair to me.

boring
I can't really speak to the details of the design but just based on those pictures, I think it looked better before, especially in picture 3. Looks to me like "simplifying the massing" just turned it into another generic, flat walled breadbox (albeit with one pointy side) that we already have too many of.

Design review seems to do an ok job with making sure the building functions well (like the parking entrance changes you mentioned) but buildings seem to always come out of the design review process looking more generic than when they went in.

there's also a good first person account of what it was like on Capitol Hill by Ben Dunn at Geekscape...

http://geekscape.net/features/15b7fbac0d900e87eb875b9aea44d0

"I was a student in my Sophmore year at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle. Life was pretty good. I had just gotten an apartment with a few friends in the Capitol Hill area...

I was going to the grocery store at around 6pm (curfew started at 7pm) when I heard shouting coming from down the street toward the store. As I neared the store I saw that there was a large group gathered at the end of the intersection. When I got close enough I saw that on the other side was a group of riot police blocking off the road. Everyone has seen cops in riot gear on TV or in movies, but there is something completely different about seeing them face to face and knowing that you are on the WRONG side of their shield."

re: "this article makes a pretty big presumption that everyone knows of and accepts the "well-established coffee scene on the Hill""

It wasn't my intention to knock Jacob for not knowing the coffee scene. I actually felt like he probably had a lot more to say about it than he would say on camera, which is what really reinforced the corporate image for me. He said that he had visited all the neighboring coffee shops, and I'm sure he had personal feelings about which one he liked best, and what he liked and didn't like about each one. But still, all he'd say on camera was that they all made great coffee. That's just part of the game when you're representing a company so I don't fault him for that, but it just reminded me that this wasn't a guy speaking for himself, he was speaking for Starbucks.

Routing
I've been undecided on where I think this streetcar should go. But after spending a couple days here in Portland and checking out their transit, I'm definitely in favor the 12th/ Broadway loop. The Portland streetcar (and MAX downtown) runs on parallel streets most of it's route and it seems to work great.

And as I've said a in countless comments and will say again, the streetcar really should to be taken to it's logical end point, Broadway and E Roy, if not all the way to Aloha.

I agree that the description of the citizens as "customers" was off-putting, but overall I was actually impressed with Mallahan at the forum. McGinn's still got my vote, but Mallahan seemed more in tuned with the issues than I expected.

Mallahans speaking style was much more clear and straight forward than McGinns, which works better in a campaign setting. McGinn is kind of like Obama in that when he answers a question he gives some background, and goes into a lot of detail and qualifications. That's good for fostering dialog, not so good for campaigning, when the media is always looking for short sound bites.

@Mike With Curls - the sports field is not in it because I couldn't see it from the spot I picked. The idea is to pick one singular spot and look around from there. I did move my tripod once but only about 10 feet.

And yes, it could move a lot faster, and I also could've added techno music and flashing lights, but that kind of defeats the purpose of an ambient shot now doesn't it? :)

@JanaF - yes I thought about that while I was shooting and while I was editing. But how do you show a place without the people in it? If I were shooting people secretively that would be one thing, but I promise you I stick out like a sore thumb with my big tripod, camera and bags.

zebra club
I heard from an even more reliable source (my girlfriend), who heard from a Zero Zero employee that Zero Zer has plans to take over the space, and turn their current space into something arts related... art/cafe maybe? can't remember exactly.

On 9/27 via twitter @zebraclub_store said "Today is the last day that the c.hill store is open. Don't fret though, we should be up and running again in no time! 85% off all day today"... That seems to conflict with what the employee said, and Zero Zeros apparent plan.

When I asked an employee at the Capitol Hill store a couple weeks ago if they were closing (based on the 85% off everything sale) she said no... so sounds like the employees there might not really be in the loop as to what's going on with the stores!

It just plays into their image of being out of touch and overly-corporate.

this is kind of funny... it just shows how Starbucks wants the message board as a decorative piece to add to the "community feel." A real coffee shop would put up a message board and wait for the community to start using it (which they would), not contact the press and ask them to beg for the community to come use their board... Starbucks, you are trying way too hard.

Regardless of where it goes on the South side... I think it should definitely go all the way to E Roy. The commercial strip of Broadway has a pretty clear end point on the North side, why not just take it all the way? It'll be within reach of a lot more housing up there on the North Broadway/10th too. RE: I don't get it
Seems crazy to us but yes, the restaurants on Las Ramblas have servers that come out of the restaurant and cross the one lane of traffic to serve people, and it works surprisingly well. I don't know if that arrangement would work as well here in the US, cars and peds seems to coexist much better in Europe than here. In this street view, the seating on the right of the traffic lane belongs to the little orange restaurant on the left. This arrangement is duplicated many times on La Rambla.

http://maps.google.com/maps?client=safari&q=la+rambla+barcel,2.173791&spn=0.028305,0.045447&t=h&z=15&iwloc=addr&layer=c&cbll=41.380649,2.173865&panoid=enGT3_cky22vcPFIgxR1aw&cbp=12,145.06243566373632,,0,5

If this actually were to happen, you're right, it would make much more sense for a restaurant on the North side of the street to utilize that seating, but there's not one there at the moment, so in my fantasy land it belongs to Vita and Quinns.

From my POV the PI is done, they're not going to be able to stay in business in their current form. But hopefully someone will be able to keep the PI brand going using an updated business model.

(DISCLAIMER - I may be slightly out of the loop in PI related news, I've been out of the country since Friday)

RE: You young whippersnappers don't know squat!
That reminds me... in 1994 I LOVED Bill Nye the science guy. I applied to be one of his on camera assistants, or something like that, even though I was probably the shyest kid in the school and would've been terrible on tv.

I was in 3rd grade at Wedgwood elementary school and living Cedar Park/ Lake City. And I still haven't been to Lindas!

SeattleIAM
Josh - thanks for posting about this event. I submitted it as a story idea to SeattleIAM.com and they approved it so I will be there covering this event for them. If any of you are there come say hi. I'll probably be pretty easy to find, I'll be the guy with the video camera interviewing people!

highchairs
not happy about the highchair trend. If I want to be reminded of how annoying kids are I'll go visit Wallingford. (I know I should be happy to see kids around considering my thoughts on families who automatically move to the suburbs when they have kids... but that doesn't make me any less aggravated by their screaming and fun having)

Summit Cottages
There is are 8 cottages right next to my apartment on Summit about a block and a half North of Top Pot that never get any attention online. I would really love to move into one of them (please add cottages in the I-5 shores to your next residential trajectory question J:) ) I posted a comment about them on hugeasscity asking if anyone knew anything about them and didn't get any response until one day I got the following email from a Legislative Aide for Dow Constantine...

--------
I also live in the neighborhood and have been fascinated by this interesting development. When I worked as a journalist, I accompanied a photographer who was taking pictures there for a story on cottage housing regulations.

I was also interested in them because of an old poster from the 1920s that a Laurelhurst activist named Kate Hemer made copies of and brought to a neighborhood meeting. It showed a set of little cottages, obviously recently constructed, on a denuded lot next to an elegant Victorian home. The poster itself called for Seattle to adopt a real zoning code (implied threat: or else someone will build something like this next to your house). I am pretty sure that it was a picture of the Summit Avenue Cottages and the home directly to the south, but unfortunately I have no idea what ever happened to my copy of the poster.

The message on the poster is especially ironic because, after years of tree growth and many modifications and improvements to the little buildings, the cottages are beautiful and a great part of the neighborhood.

I’ve pasted the assessor’s information for the cottages below. They are owned and operated as a condominium. The “year built” listed is 1920—a figure that may be approximate, although the city’s building department might have a more exact date, if you decide to do further investigation. Most of the surrounding homes were built in the year 1904.

Not terribly valuable information, I know, but I just thought I’d share it with another admirer of the cottages.

Drop down menus
Seems to be something funky going on with the drop down menus from the tabs at the top of the page. In Firefox, the "Maps" menu sticks, once it's open it doesn't go away. In Safari, the drop down menus don't appear at all.
