RE: Law enforcement wastes everyone's time and money
I dunno who's been "blindly lauding the police for their heroism", but I'll take the bait. When I hear that the police are spending time trying to track down meth dealers, I'm happy. I'm in favor of the legalization of many drugs, but meth sure as hell ain't one of 'em.

The fact that there happened to be gambling going on doesn't impress me. Card games are really not on the list of Things That Are Destroying the Fabric of Society.

Time will tell
I've only been to Elliott Bay a few times in the 12 years I've lived in Seattle; Pioneer Square is just too far away, that's how lazy I am.

I didn't love or hate it while I was there. "Love" I pretty much reserve for Powell's, but that's some tough competition. I think it's interesting to hear Kris' comments, and I felt like David (Cheesecake) wasn't trying to be unfair to him. It definitely doesn't strike me as "really disgusting".

I would definitely like to watch a video chat with Kris and Paul; as Paul says, points would be conceded by all, and folks in the area would definitely learn something.

PS: Cheesecake, you might want to fill out your CHS profile, so people can find your video website.

Ew, Victrola
Yeah, I wouldn't do much to defend Victrola. I've had far more rude service there than civil. The coffee doesn't appeal to me much, either.

And yeah, Stumptown isn't truly local. It's a growing chain (that happens to have coffee I LOVE), started in a city I used to live in. And I guess once their annual revenue gets up in the billions I'll decide that they don't need my cash, either.

What can I say... I like underdogs.

I like the idea of extending the pedestrian/non-auto area into this void; that expanse of useless asphalt has bugged me for years. The one on Broadway by the Caffe Vivace has been there the longest. The one where the 1524 shoe shop on Olive just opened, pissing me off royally. And now ANOTHER one?

The industry is horribly underregulated. They charge outrageous interest on "high risk" loans to people who need emergency cash... but I'm guessing they are making a ton of money, thus they can afford to keep opening stores. Ugh.

Bad news, best wishes to the staff...
I've been a longtime loyal customer of B/C, having filled out many bonus cards and answered a lot of "first line" puzzles over the 10+ years I've lived on the hill. I've been a little worried about them for quite a while as the number of books on the shelf has dwindled. I really do miss the way it was a year ago, when there were a ton of books to browse.... but I'm glad that Michael is closing it down the way he wants to, instead of being forced into a corner. I'll keep a lot of happy memories of books I stumbled on there, and great chats with the staff.

As for the future of books on Capitol Hill? We read a lot, and we will continue to get great books from Twice Sold Tales and Pilot Books. Half Price Books maybe is a chain... but they seem like a pretty mellow chain to me! I prefer having them on the hill than Barnes 'n' Noble. I think the doom and gloom about our future is a bit much, but things *do* change. Don't check out, don't get hysterical. Just stay involved and keep supporting your local folks. I went in to Bliss Soaps the other day... soap is flying off the shelf in there. Great community support, it warms the heart to see it.

Anyway, I'll stop mumbling. Thanks again to the Bailey/Coy folks.

Seems like if we could just get people to do a little skeptical reading about Scientology, LaRouche and the Mormons in the first few weeks they were joining, the worlds would become a far more rational place.

Sigh.

Capitalism! or something
I've been thinking about this, and I'm kinda leaning towards liking the extended metering hours on Broadway. Parking spots are rare and valuable, why shouldn't the city charge to use 'em? If it gently nudges people to walk or bike a little more often, and puts a little more money in the city to fix roads, pay for buses, etc, I think that's OK.

Heaven knows I walk and bike more and more because (a) parking is annoying and (b) it's good for me and (c) good for the planet.

Just a quick clarification, for anyone who's wondering: Yes, there are some large banks and bankers on the list of supporters of Proposition 1. There are plenty of small banks and bankers on the list, too, as well as many leaders of homeless advocacy folks that Zan-O isn't listing. See for yourself here: http://www.seattle.gov/housing/levy/TACmembers.pdf

Yes, banks will make a small, market-determined profit on the loans that are needed to build these homes, as happens with any home, business or government structure that gets built anywhere. Pointing out the fact that some big banks will be handling some of the loans is perfectly fine. Going beyond that to declare that this will "kill homeless people", maligning the measure as a giveaway to big banks and implying some kind of Bush/Cheney connection is beyond cynical, it's an odious lie.

RE: 1033 Has 11 No Votes - CHS has 11 registered Nazis?
This is a new departure for Zan-O, who has previously been simply a strident opponent of adding city parks. Part of me thinks this is just performance art, a Warhol-ian commentary on the apparent accountability-free nature of comment boards. But a growing part of me thinks this kind of rhetoric is dangerously misleading; even though commenters here are smart enough to see through Zan-O's bizarre lies, the fact remains that he's lying, and thus violating CHS's Terms of Service (see Section 2f).

A yes or no vote on 1033 has nothing to do with Nazis and nothing to do with supporting or crushing democracy. As a joke, it's possibly amusing. Paired with Zan-O's misleading and decpetive comments below about "big business support" for Prop 1 and how it will "kill homeless people", I think he's crossed a line.

I'm gonna take yet another chance to argue that replacing the viaduct with a tunnel at a cost of $2+ billion is the central fiscal problem facing the city in the coming years.

How will this affect Capitol Hill? By directing a huge chunk of the city budget towards an unnecessary, short-sighted project, neighborhoods will suffer as the tunnel sucks resources out of the budget. If we went with a cheaper, mass-transit-enabling plan (surface street option), neighborhoods would have a greater chance of having the resources they need to grow sustainably.

RE: ..... congrats, and the challenges are all ahead
Yeah, the "running as a team" thing is unusual, but I know Jen and Hong worked together on the Unpaving Paradise thing (and did great!), so it sorta makes sense. If they turn out to be dictators (or just dicks!) we can topple 'em.

Lucky me!
My date for tonight cancelled on me (in advance, how nice of her!), so you'll probably see me. :-)

This is making me hungry...
What a yummy list.

I had lunch at Cafe Stellina the other day, and was pretty much tickled pink. I would like to check 'em out for breakfast someday, too.

I've been a B&O stalwart for years, their Americanos go great with all their breakfast options. Glad to see you calling out the foul, sure wish it had a different spelling!

Croque Madame at Cafe Presse is divine.

Stuck at work -- and hungry -- on the eastside. Ah well.

Ugh...
I'm terrible about walking along fiddling with my phone late at night. I really oughta cut that out...

Yes to chinese
It is so weird that someone would open a new Pho restaurant! I'll certainly try it, but I doubt it will be as good as Pho Cyclo -- yeah, I'm weird because Than Brothers isn't my favorite!

I would love it if some place would open like Seven Stars Pepper from the ID... they would get a ton of business on Capitol Hill.

What sort of a connection?
A "deep" connection. Starbucks has a 12-ounce connection to my local community! Deeper than a slice of blueberry hazelnut bread! Deeper than personal-sized pesto & sausage pizzette! Deeper than a tip jar full of quarters spilled out on the faux-Umbrian quartzite countertop at closing time!

Allow me to return to my sacred origins, Starbucks! Let me commune once more with my kin... please don't keep your doors closed any longer than absolutely necessary.
