As an architect of affordable housing, I agree that the highrise for subsidized housing is a horrible idea for many reasons and thankfully they are not being built anymore because most everyone agrees. I do have to take issue with your "fragile population" choice of words. Characterizing poor people as "fragile" is so condescending!

And I also take issue with your analogy of this suicide with someone dying because of the World Trade Center attacks. Seriously? You think people jumping off the World Trade Center is the same as suicide?

great drinks at both ends of the spectrum
I really respect a place that has $4 wells for a 2 hour happy hour at a reasonable hour AND has a bartender who makes a truly perfect Sazerac with actual absinthe. Also, a great variety of seating: two-tops, booths, nice long bar.

sure, that's all well and good if you've HEARD of Capitol Hill Housing...
...but a big part of this fundraiser and the Izilla fundraiser is to help make people aware of CHH. Hipsters from Ballard who wander in to Oddfellows for a drink tonight will learn about CHH, and may give when they get home. Izilla attracts parents from all over the city...maybe they don't know how hard it is for families to find affordable housing on the Hill, and what CHH is doing to provide it.

Capitol Hill Housing has only recently been able to do private fundraising. (They used to function solely as a PDA). They are already excellent at these sort of community partnerships.

(and so wish you'd do away with the constant condescension, Mw/C. It blocks the view of your argument)

Make on-street parking match the market
There is a garage on Pike, above where University Honda was, that charges $137 a month for parking. The on-street cost better be closer to that number than to $40 a month in order to make it market-priced parking as Professor Shoup describes.

While the parking issues are supposed to be discussed during the SEPA process, there aren't any community meetings for SEPA. 2nd EDG still needs three options on SOMETHING
Very frustrating to see a complete lack of options on this project. Basically the Applicant is saying (to the Board and to the neighbors), "Thanks, but we don't need your input." The Design Review Board still expects to weigh in on options for SOME aspect of the building at a second EDG, if not the massing. This packet looks like a Recommendation meeting packet, just without the colors. They were asked to come back for a second GUIDANCE meeting for a reason.

I cannot believe they are not keeping the old building completely commercial after the feedback at the last meeting, but I guess that is what happens if you switch architects mid-stream. Real shame that this is the first project that might take advantage of the preservation height bonus.

Very important to attend!
EDG (Early Design Guidance) is the best chance to direct the outcome of this project. This project is so important because it's the first to take advantage of the new legislation and because of its prominent location. The Design Review Board needs to see us all invested in this process and the developer and architect need to hear our concerns. Critical mass is essential!

I have had great tacos here, and I love that we finally have something resembling cheap non-chain street food on that end of the hill.

But the burritos, BOTH TIMES, were horrible. They have no butts. A burrito has to have a butt end, and a non-butt end. And this was a loosely wrapped, not even that great, soggy lump.

There was a stark divide between the neighborhood folks who WERE included on the panel and those who spoke at the end. Not opening in the Castro, opening inthe MISSION, big difference!
The American Apparel is being protested for trying to open in the MISSION not the CASTRO. The Castro long ago succumbed to nothing but chains. It is Gay EPCOT. The Mission has an incredible history of resisting chains.

I wish I could come up with a good Seattle analogy to make this difference more clear, but Seattle doesn't *have* a neighborhood as ridiculously pandering as the Castro, nor as amazingly independent as the Mission.
