report from the SPD Office of PR and Really Obvious Things
I'm not convinced that this guy was trying to avoid detection.

I wonder if the shooter's apparent avoidance of the dashboard camera -- the camera that every SPD patrol car has, which captures the view out the front of the car like every police car dash cam on every YouTube video or Cops episode that anyone has ever seen -- was the only thing that led SPD spokesperson Mark Jamieson to believe that he or she was trying to avoid detection.

This could have been your garden variety "I'm a cop killer and I don't care who knows it" murder botched by a malfunctioning transmission, for instance. There could have been a cat in the road ahead of him. Maybe he figured that dash cams record through the passenger compartment and out the side of the vehicle. Did anyone find out if the shooter left a business card or shouted his name before driving away? Let's not jump to conclusions.

Avoiding Detection
As soon as I read that he backed up I was convinced he was trying to avoid detection. Why would you shoot somebody, a cop in particular and then back up to leave instead of just speeding off ahead of you.

And to the previous poster, if you're shooting a cop you're not going to worry about a cat in the road ahead of you. And everybody has seen those cop shows on tv...the dash cams always face forward.

RE: Avoiding Detection
J, I think you missed my sarcasm. It doesn't take someone avoiding the view of the patrol car's dash camera to figure out that he was probably trying to avoid detection. It's kind of a given that someone who just fired a gun into a police car would then try to avoid detection, and it's kind of worthless for the police to inform us of such.

I understand the idea that they wanted to say, "this wasn't an opportunistic crime; it was premeditated" but I think that saying this was premeditated because someone thought to avoid being on camera is like saying that a purse snatching was premeditated because someone went straight for the purse. Any fool who mugs a woman goes for the purse and any fool who shoots a cop avoids the dash cam in the cop car.

Was it really the backing up part that convinced you of the shooter's intent to avoid detection, or would you have assumed that anyway? To answer your question, after shooting someone -- a cop in particular -- one would back up to leave instead of speeding off ahead because one has an ounce of sense and realizes that speeding off ahead would put one in view of the dash cam with which every SPD patrol car is equipped.
