Seattle Times' list of city sundials highlights a cool old Capitol Hill structure -- the Sam Hill Mansion:

... a bronze vertical dial easily visible from street on the side of private home. Built in 1909, it is the oldest existing dial in Seattle. Motto: "I mark no hours not bright/Stedfast thru gloom I stand/Waiting till God command/To shine on me his light."

Even though he built his own stonehenge and the Peace Arch in Blaine, Sam Hill -- and his mansion -- were new to me. You can read all about the turn-of-the-century entrepreneur and philanthropist in this HistorLink essay. Hill is not, however, new to the Harvard & Highland "luxury" condo project. They've included Hill's bunker-style mansion in their flashy marketing materials. No mention of the sundial, however. Opens Spring 2009.

No, not this one on 15th, Dan Savage. Tidbit Bistro blogs and they're pointing out what they say is the most beautiful garden in Seattle. Guess that makes it the best garden on Capitol Hill, too.

We believe one of the most beautiful gardens in Seattle is located just around the corner from the restaurant. The Streissguth garden on Capitol Hill is a hidden gem in our urban jungle. This garden is located just a few of blocks from tidbit bistro at 1600 Broadway East.

St. Mark's is the yellow swath in the northwest corner of our CHS map.

Remember the boyfriend and girlfriend who were breaking up and used Capitol Hill Community Garage Sale Day as a way to rid themselves of shared possesions? Here's how it went from neighbor Amanda:

It went pretty well. We put up broken heart signs and sold &/or gave away most of our stuff. Most people that stopped by had CHS maps. Sunday we tried it again and didnt have nearly as many people.
