Incentive Zoning Workshop

Organized by City Neighborhood Council

Tuesday, October 21, 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.

West Precinct Community Room - 810 Virginia Street, Seattle

Incentive zoning allows significant height and density increases in exchange for a public benefit, mostly "workforce" housing in the current proposal.

What will it mean to your neighborhood?

What does it mean to the city?

Join the City Neighborhood Council for an evening dialogue on current proposals for enabling Incentive Zoning in residential and commercial areas outside of the downtown. The format will be short panel introduction of keytopics, followed by open discussion. The purpose of the meeting is to share a variety of perspectives on the concept of incentive zoning and the costs and benefits of applying it broadly across Seattle's neighborhoods. Does incentive zoning produce a significant public benefit or is it a financial windfall for developers?

Focused discussion on:

*        What Incentive Zoning could look like in your neighborhood - it would...

I see cruiser bikes all over Capitol Hill.  The problem is that they're never actually moving.  Instead they are locked up (and usually rusting away) or clogging up apartment building bike rooms.  Unless your entire life is isolated to a few north-south streets, our hilly 'hood is less-than-ideal for cruising around in a steel tank with limited gearing.  So why are there so many cruisers clogging up prime bike parking real estate?  Do all of those California transplants drag their beach bikes with them when they move?  Or are cruisers one of those impulse buys that "seemed like a good idea at the time"?

p.s. J, just a thought, but how about adding some questions to the census to empirically test this.  e.g., "What kind of bike do you own?" and "How often do you ride your bike?"

I'll be the first to admit it -- this site zooms by a lot of stuff and only rarely follows up. So, in the spirit of tying up loose ends, here's a post in which we can take a moment to pause, look back and clean up the mess.

  • We'll still take your home-baked presidential campaign banner ads to post here on the site.
  • Ultimate Frisbee in general Capitol Hill vicinity: "pretty solid"
  • Neighbors who post, we've changed the categories for posts. Don't really need the sub-neighborhood name categories thanks to our now robust database of neighborhood info available to the post location map system. Please make a note:
About CHS -- stuff about capitolhillseattle.com
Community -- stuff about groups, organizations, meetings and ultimate frisbee
    Crime -- stuff about crime
Food & Drink -- restaurants, etc.
News, etc. -- Everything else. Most stuff goes here.
  • Don't forget you can also post from your mobile device via e-mail. Directions here.
  • While you enjoy listening to the KEXP DJs cringe as they are forced to count down the listeners'...

Here's a step by step for posting to this site via e-mail -- works on any device including, of course, the iPhone.

1) Log into the site and go to the Your Page tab

2) Look for the 'edit your profile' link next to your username.

3) Click the edit link and scroll to the bottom section -- Posting by email. Enter the e-mail address you will be mailing from and a simple code you can remember (but nobody else can guess --) in the "Send emails to" box. In this example, let's say we entered 'test98aq'

4) Choose whether you want the e-mail posts to go live automatically or you can store them in draft mode to publish later.

5) Save the profile updates and add the neighborlogs.com address to your contacts for the e-mail account you will be sending from. In the above example, the address would be post+jseattle.test98aq@neighborlogs.com

6) Compose your mail. Subject line will become the post headline. Adding one of the post categories -- About CHS, Community, News, etc., Crime, or Food & Drink --  in parentheses will file the...

They weren't getting much done in the rain, but there is a film crew, complete with maybe 10 trucks, set up to film in a doorway on 13th Ave. Has anyone seen or heard anything about what the production is?

Oh, wait. Contest is canceled.

Volunteer Park

So, um, anybody want to be the CHS graphic design and photo intern? What's it cost to buy a photo? Wesa's pretty pic of summer-y grass needs to change after a good, long run.

This conversation has me working on a Capitolhillseattle.com census. Details to come. I'm in a measuring the collective kind of mood. Add in this weekend's KEXP's pledge drive promotion countdown of the top 903 albums of all time and this question was inevitable:

What's your favorite album... ever?

I'm data driven so will not argue with the numbers -- my favorite album, it turns out, is Morcheeba's Charango (unsurprisingly not on Rolling Stone Mag's list of top 500 albums). You?

According to this article, Neighbours may lose it's lease.  No official word on what the building would be used for if Neighbours loses.  I'm going to hazard a guess that potentially we may see mixed use condo/retail at this location within 3 years.

Hope to see several thousands of you tonight at Liberty on 15th Ave. I'll bring nametags. You bring amazing anecdotes from the streets of Capitol Hill for me to embellish, post and profit from. We'll also provide "free whitening" thanks to sponsor Theron Baker, DDS. OK. Not true. But it will still be actual happy hour at Liberty when we begin at 6. So you've got that going for you.

Here's a glimpse at you in infographic form.

We recently asked you each to choose -- gay, hipster or yuppie. Turns out, we'll have basically equal-sized teams at the next dodge ball tournament:

We can loan the hipsters a player or two, no?

We also measure how many comments you make each day. For parts of August and September, we turned on a registration requirement to leave a comment. As you can see, you didn't like that. So we turned it off. Good idea.

And, we even know when you wake up. Here's a look at the percent of visitors we receive in each hour of the day. Peaks around 9 a.m. Good morning, sleepyheads.

Just a block down the street from where I live and the route I walk to work everyday. It was a matter of 5 minutes that made this not be me as I also carry a bag to work. Makes me wonder what happened as this is not a quiet part of the hill with SCCC bordering Harvard.

I wish the best for him and his recovery.

Man in serious condition after Capitol Hill stabbing

From P-I reporter Jon Naito:

Two men attacked and stabbed a 34-year-old man early Tuesday evening during a robbery on Capitol Hill.

Police received a call around 5:47 p.m. that a man was being assaulted near the intersection of East Howell Street and Harvard Avenue.

Police said two males believed to be in their 20s or 30s attempted to take a black bag the victim was carrying.

When the man resisted, one of his attackers stabbed him in the neck. The assailants fled with the victim's bag and left the scene in a two-tone green van possibly driven by a woman. Police said the make of the van might have been a Ford.

The victim was taken to Harborview...

Liberty Bar
Originally uploaded by Rob Gruhl

Hey yuppies, hipsters and gays, the votes are tallied and the notice is going out -- we're gathering at Liberty next Tuesday night at 6p. The little 15th Ave gay hipster yuppie bar won the right to host the soiree against other best-bartender-on-the Hill nominees.

Is Liberty's mix master truly worthy? If it's like any social gathering that I am usually part of, we'll put the 'tender to the test with long, rambling orders, offensive requests including Diet Coke and general awkwardness. But we'll make up for it with fantastic tips.

Liberty's happy hour runs 'til 7. The CHS crowd is usually good for about two hour of critical mass so show up by 7ish or risk having nobody to talk to but me or, gasp, strangers.

In the recent Slog coverage of Crave's lost lease, neighbor jrrrl makes a suggestion for the displaced eatery:

Move to 15th. Can we please put a looong piece of masking tape along the middle of 14th ave? Yuppies stay on that side, hipsters stay on this side. Gays get to use both sides due to a grandfather clause, but only if they're still flaming. We will trade you Boom Noodle for the Canterbury.

I'm curious -- which team are you on? I usually (mistakenly) assume everybody is just like me. That would make you all disgusting, money grubbing, sell-out yuppies. Let's do a quick show of hands.

Did you know it took Genghis Khan two tries to defeat the Khwarezmid Empire? It's true. Babe Ruth? Did not hit a homerun in his first trip to the plate. And John Lennon wanted to sleep with his mother. All of these are true. And go to show you one thing.

Some people never give up.

So, here I am again, saddling up the bucking bronco that is neighborhood blogging for another ride. We're building a neighborhood blogging service called Neighborlogs -- taking the magic that creates the content, the community and the advertising at the heart of this site and Centraldistrictnews.com and putting it in a bottle. And giving it away for free. We make our cash off of advertising on sites that use our service. We're practically a charity!

Why tell you about this today? For one, my longstanding rivalry with Seattlest's MvB requires me to attempt to one-up him on his day of glory. For two, I'm looking for a few more 'some people' types to join the Neighborlogs beta. We're looking for a few good bloggers who either are already...

They used more than three words, but I love The Stranger's summary of Capitol Hill in their "Everything you need to know about the city" article this week.
