Amid continued rise in East Precinct burglaries, somebody broke into Seattle Fish Guys and stole all the salmon

As burglaries have continued to climb in the East Precinct, one local business is vowing to recover after a break-in emptied the Central District shop of cash and took something even more valuable — its stock of smoked salmon.

“It’s truly disheartening to report that cash, checks, equipment, and our beloved smoked salmon were taken,” Seattle Fish Guys reported about the overnight burglary this weekend of its 23rd and Jackson shop. “Fortunately, our team is safe, and we’ve acted swiftly by contacting the authorities and cooperating closely with them to gather any leads. We urge anyone who noticed anything unusual nearby to please come forward. Your assistance could be crucial.”

Police are investigating the burglary which was first reported Sunday morning.

The break-in is part of an upward trend in burglaries of homes and businesses reported around the East Precinct that began last spring, according to Seattle Police data, and hasn’t really let up. There were about five burglaries reported in the East Precinct per day last month. Prior to the pandemic, the East Precinct average around three reported break-ins per day.

Seattle Fish Guys has operated a shop at the location since its 2016 opening and have remained in the neighborhood even as Amazon Fresh moved in across the street. The store is encouraging customers to come shop and eat to help support its recovery.

Social injustice brings poverty! Unless we all equal socially crime will continue! The system is wrong and they don’t fix things properly. The law needs changes but they cover their eyes and don’t prefer to heard.
Injustice and poverty is the main reason humankind will injured itself. Betty Krull

Cool. It’s the rich people at the immigrant business who are the problem and the junkies robbing them are the Robin Hoods of Seattle.

There’s no denying we have many serious social injustice issues in this country, but why do I get the feeling you’d be singing a different tune if it was forced ‘equality’ by somebody breaking into your home or business and putting your livelihood and safety on the line? Platitudes only go so far.

Right now the better thing to do is go get some fish from the Guys and help keep them around!

If I had a business, I’d keep some pet Rottweilers at the store to greet the overnight visitors

According to the data from the police data tracker, it looks like we’re still only a bit up from pre-pandemic levels.

March 2018 had 724 burglaries.
March 2019: had 582 burglaries
March 2024 had 685 burglaries.

Thats a downward trend that is offset by the preceding months:
January 2018: 680
January 2019: 762
Jan 2024: 732

Feb 2018: 594
Feb 2019: 492
Feb 2024: 646

2018 Q1: 1998 burglaries
2019 Q1: 1836 burglaries
2024 Q1: 2063 burglaries

So, burglaries are up about 3% from 2018.

Small point – there were 149 *reported* burglaries. My understanding is that crime is being viewed as underreported, correct?

People who want to believe that crime is everywhere and out of control and Seattle is on fire always dismiss actual data with the “no one reports crimes” anecdata.

They have no data to back up that claim, but we can all nod along with them because every says it and it just feels right. They’re also assuming that businesses aren’t filing police reports in order to speed up their insurance claims, which is certainly possible. Unlikely, but possible.
