A small group of protesters took the fight to Shell on Capitol Hill Tuesday night far from Terminal 5 where the massive Polar Pioneer is moored in West Seattle. They were not in kayaks.

Thanks to @Cat_Whitney for the pictures as #shellno activists targeted the gas station at Broadway and Pike with a protest to bring attention to the Port of Seattle’s role in the global energy giant’s plans for drilling oil in the arctic.

The environmental groups behind the protests say that the risks of spills and environmental damage from big oil in the Arctic are too great to allow further exploration.

Royal Dutch Shell says the risks are overstated and that it can prevent spills from happening and handle clean-up in the frozen environment.

Tuesday night, the #shellno protesters hoped to recruit people to join the next major phase of Seattle kayaktivism when the giant rig departs Elliott Bay bound for northern waters.

“Join the land or water response,” the group’s flyer read.
