CHS Pics | The Northern Lights from Capitol Hill — UPDATE: coronal mass ejection!

Pacific Northwestern Lights (Images: Verene with permission to CHS)

Despite a sunny streak that has the Puget Sound feeling more like the Bay Area this fall, don’t forget we’re living in a northern town. Want proof? Verene shares these pictures with us of the Aurora Borealis visible early Monday morning from Capitol Hill:

Hey jseattle,

I saw the aurora borealis from the top of the hill (near 17th and E. Howell) very early this morning around 4:45 to about 5:15 a.m; it was kind of faint, but still exciting to see! I went up to the roof of my apartment building, looked north, and saw green “curtains.” I took some photos (two of which are attached) with exposure times of about 3 to 4 seconds on a Fujifilm S9600. Thought it might be fun to share, if there’s room on the chs blog!

Have a good day,

-Verene

Hyping celestial events in Seattle is a bit of a fool’s errand but we do hear about possible Northern Lights windows of opportunity above the area from time to time. Before you set your alarm for Tuesday morning, we’re checking in with various experts in things sky to find out what is going on up there. Clear skies probably help — should remain so until the weekend.
