Capitol Hill library closure: construction, People’s Library and the last time (for now)

One of Seattle’s more pitiful traditions is about to hopefully come to an end. It’s time for our annual week of library closures around the city. The budget-minded sleight of hand has helped keep services and hours as robust as possible around Seattle through recent lean times while giving the library system’s administrators a little summertime cost relief. Below, details on the Capitol Hill closure and some hope for the system’s future.

  • Capitol Hill construction: “The Seattle Public Library system will close Monday, Aug. 27 through Sunday, Sept. 2 due to citywide budget cuts. All libraries will be closed for the Labor Day holiday Monday, Sept. 3. Regular Library operations will resume Tuesday, Sept. 4. During the closure, construction will take place in the entryway of the Capitol Hill Branch. The project will improve front access to the building with new handrails and a modification of the concrete approach.”
  • Central District People’s Library  — As libraries close citywide next week, the Seattle People’s Library will open in the CD:

The Seattle People’s Library has been collecting books they plan to lend out from a not-yet-disclosed outdoor location in the CD Monday. The closest book donation location is at Twice Sold Tales at Harvard and Denny on Capitol Hill or you can donate to the library when they open Monday.

  • Hope for the future: Thanks to the recently-passed, $122.6 million library levy, Montlaker points out this should be the last of the closures… for now.
