Scooter rider injured in 12th Ave crash sends update

The best, most amazing thing about being part of this site? Sometimes the news talks back. We were surprised — and happy — to hear from the woman who was hit in this June 29th truck vs. scooter collision on 12th Ave near Pine. 34-year-old Erin Dessert updates us on her painful injuries, her path to recovery and a special endorsement for the shop where she bought her helmet. Get better, Erin, and thanks for reaching out to share your update with CHS.

This accident is an unintentional conflict to both parties. In this case, although the woman driving the suv is legally at fault, I forgive her in spirit. Both of us would turn back time if we knew how. I, unfortunately, accrued physical injuries that will take an unforeseen amount of time to heal and my company scooter has lived it’s last day. According to my medical record this week, I crushed my left ankle, broke my pelvis in six places, lacerated my kidney, broke four ribs, broke my nose and lost some teeth.

My two surgeries were successful and the icy team at Harbor View Hospital have kept me in ICU and in expert care for a period of time that has done me a light year of good. I just completed my third blood transfusion and stood up for the first time today. I am blessed to have no spinal or brain injuries and should be walking independently by the time the snow falls again. Thank you for this article and photo. It has meant alot to me in communicating details of a situation that was difficult for me to evaluate in the present. God bless Seattle scooter and motorcycle riders: I scored my life saving helmet at Scoot Seattle on South Lake Union.

Geez, that really sucks that you got so beat up. Glad you’re gonna be okay. Sorry you’ve gotta go through this. Spending the summer recovering is a real drag.

Looks like the truck is coming out of the liquor store parking lot.

It was. The original store reported the SUV was taking a left hand turn out of the liquor store garage.

Erin I too am a Capitol Hill Scooter rider and have been hit before on 15th. Its scary out there and I am so glad to hear that you are not only alive but now able and willing to send in updates! Though I don’t know you I have thought of you everytime I scoot down 12th. A week after your accident in the early hours I saw someone else laid flat on 12th. Its a reminder to us all to drive with caution and ALWAYS Wear a helmet! Best wishes girl!

It should also serve as a reminder to car/truck drivers to pay attention, slow down and watch out for those scooters and motorcycles. They aren’t as big as cars and sometimes difficult to see.

That parking lot and exit is a complete death trap, so I’m glad to hear you’re okay!

And a reminder to everyone else: PLEASE donate blood! It’s only there to help people like Erin because someone gave it to the community blood supply. Puget Sound Blood Center is on Terry and Madison.

Drivers don’t have a duty to provide information to other drivers or pedestrians. But when they do volunteer information, they have a responsibility to ensure the information is accurate. This issue usually comes up when one driver waives another through an intersection. When one driver waves another through an intersection and an accident happens both drivers (the one blindly entering the intersection and the one who waived the driver into the intersection) are responsible.

Both the driver of the SUV and the public transit employee are legally responsible for the collision and Ms. Dessert’s damages. In order to pursue claims against the public transit authority (probably METRO) it’s going to be necessary to file a tort claim form. METRO has 60 days to respond to the tort claim form.

Yes!!! I have been a blood-doner for years and thank goodness for good karma. Having a lacerated gluteal vein caused severe internal bleeding and HALF my blood was replaced with three blood transfusions. wow.

I apologize for being redundant, but we are trying to put this case back together.
