I’m giving to the nonprofit that I work for, NPower NW. We help numerous nonprofits in the community utilize technology to meet their missions. A gift to NPower is a gift to the entire NW nonprofit sector.

I run the membership program for Three Dollar Bill Cinema, presenters of the Outdoor Cinema at Cal Anderson Park and the Seattle Lesbian & Gay Film Festival. Anyone can become a member or renew a membership through the Seattle Foundation’s GiveBIG program. You’ll be prepared early for the 2011 Seattle Lesbian & Gay Film Festival: October 14-23, and you’ll be helping support LGBT arts in this community.

One local charity for foster kids, one bigger charity that’s under attack.
Treehouse also has a donor matching every donation up to $5000 today, so your money will be stretched twice.

Cap Hill is a great pedestrian neighborhood, but a lot of Seattle’s other neighborhoods, and many more around the region, aren’t so lucky. I gave to Feet First, who’ve been advocating for pedestrians and doing cool stuff for the last ten years.

I gave to Community Voice Mail ( http://www.seattlefoundation.org/npos/Pages/CommunityVoiceMa). They provide a phone number/voice mail plus access to local community information, job opportunities and other resources to people who are homeless or in crisis/transition. Kinda hard to secure a job/place to live/get your shit together without a way of being contacted. And they’ve been operating in Seattle for nearly 20 years.

I’m Giving Big to the agency I work for – Seattle Counseling Service. I feel so fortunate to work for an agency that I believe in with all my heart. And we, like so many others, are in need of financial assistance so that we can keep providing services to our community.

Sightline is a think tank focusing on sustainability issues in the pacific northwest, and Neighborhood House… does a lot of different things. Here’s what they say on their About Us: “…help diverse communities of people with limited resources attain their goals for self-sufficiency, financial independence, health, and community building.”

I gave to the Cross Cultural Health Care Program.

No, they’re not endangered but they are culturally important to the Pacific Northwest and Capitol Hill. It’s also important to support crows and other common birds because their value is in education and awareness. They’re one of the few birds many kids, and adults for that matter, see on a regular basis in the city and therefore offers a connection to the natural world. We also gain great insight into bird behavior and thought by watching and studying them. I highly recommend reading ‘Crow Planet’ to learn more about the benefit of urban crows.

Thank you to those who have already contributed to Lifelong AIDS Alliance through GiveBIG! The response has been overwhelming and we are almost at the $5,000 mark. We are grateful to you and the Seattle Foundation and supporters for the stretch match. You are amazing!

My major gift was to Humanities Washington–to support their efforts to improve individual and community life through public programs that interpret culture and provide a forum for civic dialogue. Also, Umo theater, Northwest film forum, planned parenthood, Neighborhood Care, and ACT Theater. None of these were hugh donations but with the possibility of some match it really gave me the incentive.

CD Forum for Arts & Ideas, which is based in the Central District, but holds many of its performances in Capitol Hill.

Several other non-Cap Hill groups as well. This is a great giving opportunity!

…this:

“Transaction Fees
4.5% of your total donation, plus a $0.25 per transaction, will be deducted as a transaction fee.”

Taking a percentage of the cut for a credit card transaction is robbery. I will have to donate to the charities of my choice through another method (direct is usually best).

I understand what you are saying, but ANY time you donate using a credit card, there is a transaction fee. So if you decide to donate through your favorite charity’s website today instead of through GiveBIG, there will still be fees deducted, and no additional dollars going to the charity.

Of course, you could decide to send them a check instead and avoid fees.

Credit card transactions aren’t free. Not for non-profits, and not for businesses. NPOS and businesses choose to absorb the fees because the increase in donations/business is worth the expense.

genevieve

I meant to add that a fee specific to Seattle Foundation is not unreasonable. The amount of work and resources they had to provide to pull this off is pretty significant. Again, I get what you’re saying, and if people are motivated to donate directly to charities then the day is still a success, but I hardly think the Seattle Foundation is getting all TicketMaster on participating non-profits.

umvue

I understand and accept that there needs to be a fee. I do not accept that it needs to be multiplicative (a percentage) rather than flat. Why does it cost more to process a $1000 credit card transaction than a $500 transaction? Not right.

umvue
umvue

Agreed but… I don’t understand why a flat fee isn’t applied. Unless larger donations are subsidizing the smaller donations. I know that the bank is likely taking a small percentage cut but it’s not clear how much of an additional cut the Foundation is taking.

UPDATE
I see that SF states they don’t take a cut of the fees. Wow. You’d think they could negotiate a better deal than 4.5% processing.

so I gave BIG to both the library and to Town Hall. The library cuz it supported me intellectually, spiritually and logistically when I was unemployed, and Town Hall because it is a gift to this city. Where else can you see the thinkers, performers, movers & shakers of this world for so little monetary outlay? We are truly blessed in Seattle, and I am so happy to be able to give back now!!
