Capitol Hill food+drink: Altura new on Broadway, Melrose adds shellfish shop, Oasis RIP

Alright, who’s hungry? Here’s the latest installment of Capitol Hill food + drink news. At this rate, you’ll have about $2 to spend on records and CDs this month. Choose wisely. Got a tip? [email protected]

  • This item is so fresh-from-the-oven that, well, it’s not fully cooked. But no matter. The word is out. There’s a new restaurant moving into the old Edgar the Store space on north Broadway. It is called Altura and involves a couple with the last name of Lockwood and that is about as much as we know right now. Cue a dozen people sending CHS links to Altura’s website, Facebook page and Twitter accounts. According to the DPD, the backers are going to spend about $50 grand converting the shop from retail to restaurant.

Unfortunately, the city doesn’t require restaurants to fill in a “Cuisine” check box so we dunno what Altura will serve. One might speculate Italian. We’d tell one we’re guessing southern hemisphere. But whether it’s a la altura o por debajo, it’s good to see the space in motion again. We’ll update when we know more. Unless the local foodie media horde beats us to it. Then we’ll still update you.
  • E Pike’s Oasis Cafe bit the big one before last week’s notes but didn’t make it into the bullet-point batch because we were working a hot angle on the story and… the story fell through. We told you Oasis had been for sale. Nobody bought it. But we did talk to one project that was hoping to transform their street food concept into a fixed-place model. They say, nope, we’re not moving into space. Looks like the space will be empty. For now.
  • Melrose Market is about to add a new shop to its offerings. Taylor Shellfish is planning to open its first ever “inland” store and chowder bar next Monday with a planned grand opening party in July — UPDATE: Taylor contacted us to say while they’re close to opening, they’re looking at a soft opening with a ramp-up into July. Basically, you know the drill — there are a lot of loose ends to pull together on these projects so firm start/open dates are always fuzzy. Taylor says its grand opening will probably come around third week of June.

We will be providing a seven day a week location where you can purchase our oysters, clams, mussels, geoduck, and scallops, brought to Seattle throughout the week directly from our farms. We will have live tanks for shellfish storage, and plan on offering a variety of other items.

You might recall that the chowder bar is taking over the space in Melrose that used to house Velouria. Early this year, the fashion boutique gave up its Capitol Hill location due to poor sales. Velouria is run by Tes de Luna. She’s married to Sonic Boom’s Jason Hughes. Last week, Sonic Boom announced it too was leaving the Hill.

  • Thursday night is PrideFeast. It’s the fourth year for the promotion where participating restaurants give up to 20% of your bill to worthy LGBT organizations. Not sure why more restaurants don’t participate in this one, other than the marketing muscle it takes to get a benefit night off the ground. Here are this week’s PrideFeast options: Julia’s, TidBit, Via Tribunali (Capitol Hill only), Barrio and the Tin Table.
  • More Pride. Marination Station is selling these as a special Pride Week promo. Happy meal?
  • More on Lucky 8, Chinese delivery coming to 14th and Union.
  • Have to ask what some of the former Blueacre Seafood folks now working at Skillet Diner have to say about this dirt dug by EaterSeattle.
  • Speaking of 14th Ave, somebody on the stretch near Skillet, Piecora’s and the coming-soon bear bar got burgled last week. SPD report short on details so far. We’ll see what else we can find out.
  • More on that bear bar soon, too. Non-burglary related. UPDATE: Or not. Looks like Mike Reis also told the Slog his disappointing story of a local printer deciding it couldn’t make material for the new bar on morale grounds. The bar will be known as Diesel, by the way.
  • Also got a tip on a big fight at a Capitol Hill late night food stop this past Friday night. Another call to SPD goes on the “to do” list.
  • Replacing a departing bartending legend at Zig Zag: A Barrio, Sun Liquor alum.
  • Celebrity endorsements in the cards for Louis the lost-then-found Boston terrier? Erin from the Bottleneck has plans.
  • Nancy Leson of the SEA Times profiles 12th Ave’s own Graham Baba architects writes that their work “defines the look of the new Seattle restaurant.” Slog is not impressed.
  • Yes, Broadway has a bakery. It’s only open during the school year, though :(
  • I don’t know what this means. Does Gene Simmons love pie?
  • “People always ask what kind of club Q is going to be and our answer is always the same: ‘A Capitol Hill Club.’” From billinexile.com (ads NSFW).

It’s next to La Spiga. I saw customers in there all weekend but they do not have a sign nor a menu posted.

Any idea?

I can understand not having to file a “cuisine” but it is crucially important that the documentation reveal whether there will be vegetarian options. That the city is not doing this is offensive to lots of people I am sure. I myself am concerned about this and I know other people must be as one of the things that I and other people enjoy is being indignant and telling each other how right we are. Something must be done!!!!
