It’s been almost a month since we told you that a wait for German pump parts was keeping Cal Anderson’s fountain turned off. With the fountain still running dry — yes, the drizzle makes it wet, we know but not in a *useful* way where you can race sticks etc. — we checked in with Parks to find out if the Germans were still holding out on us. Park’s answer: The fountain should be back soon.
The vendor is who is repairing the pump anticipates receiving the parts for the repair later this week. Once they repair and test the pump, they will notify us. As soon as we receive the repaired pump, we will immediately coordinate the installation and get the fountain up and running.
Meanwhile, no update on the fence situation. Target remains the second week of July.
jseattle, do you know if they are ever going to replace/repair the missing stones in the fountain? Each year more and more go missing.
Sounds like something for us to look into later this summer. We’ll ask.
Now would be a good time for them to replace the stones, as the water is not running.
what a waste of water and energy, leave it off.
Oh, puh-leez. The water is re-circulated so it’s not “wasted,” and I doubt the electric bill is very significant.
A real waste is to not have water pouring through a beautiful fountain because of ill-informed environmental concerns.
Did they not hear of International Express air service? Parks is a dysfunctional dept, in many ways. Remember people are getting paid for all this work. Paid.
Oh, remember it will take two moths to replace 8 light poles, a good and pushy time line is 8 days …
And out of service things like the fountain, are really rank in such a wonderful space as Cal Anderson park. Seattle can do better…. really better.
A goodly proportion of the water is not recirculated but is lost through evaporation. Whatever. I’m all in favor of wasting water for aesthetics and possible disease transmission.
$14,103.60 per year just for electricity.
*assumptions: 5HP motor @ 28amps, $0.25 per kW.
14k sounds fine to me for a water feature.
The environmental and economical benefits of making Capitol Hill a more attractive place to live/work/play far outweigh any environmental or economical cost of running this fountain.
It seems like the reflecting pool is evaporating too, is that tied to the other fountain?
Between the non-functioning fountain and the fences, Cal Anderson feels like a real bummer these days! And then they are closing the playfield to replace the lights soon too, right? Poor little park, you are a mess.
Think for a second… how many hundreds of thousands of fountains are there in the world? You would do well to stop giving a shit…
$0.25 per kwh? Where do you live?
I think it’s more like $0.13-0.16, not that I have a bill sitting in front of me. Oh and over 90% of that electricity comes from hydroelectric power, so it’s not “dirty” electricity.
WHen will they replace the stones in the fountain that have broken loose? It’s not rocket science.
