Investigators seek information on murdered woman last seen on Capitol Hill in 1972

Part of a 39-year-old Capitol Hill mystery has been solved. But the bigger question remains. Who killed Kerry May-Hardy after she disappeared from Capitol Hill in 1972? Details from the Seattle Times:

A striking resemblance between a forensic sketch from human remains found in Eastern Washington and a woman who disappeared from Seattle’s Capitol Hill neighborhood nearly 40 years ago, along with DNA from the missing woman’s mother, have unlocked one mystery of what happened to Kerry May-Hardy.

Now, detectives are trying to determine how the 22-year-old woman died — and even whether there could be any link to serial killer Ted Bundy.

DNA recovered from the remains has been matched to a sample provided by the family of May-Hardy, who vanished in June 1972, Undersheriff Clayton Myers said Friday. Her disappearance was reported at the time to Seattle police by May-Hardy’s mother.

Investigators’ attention now turns back to Capitol Hill in June 1972 when May-Hardy was last seen. According to the Times, her disappearance coincides with the start of Theodore Bundy’s infamous “Ted” murders.

According to crime writer Ann Rule, Bundy spent a lot of time on the Hill:

As part of a requirement for his psychology degree, Bundy began volunteering at the Crisis Clinic — a nonprofit, 24-hour hotline — located at the time in an office building up on Capitol Hill. It was here where he first met and befriended Rule who was a fellow volunteer.

Investigators are now seeking anybody who might have information about May-Hardy’s 1972 disappearance:

The case is being actively investigated by the Kittitas County Sheriff’s Office. Investigators will begin searching for and revieweing the original reports and seaking friends and relatives who may remember the circumstances of the victim’s disappearance.

If anyone has any information regarding Kerry May-Hardy in 1972, they are asked to contact Detective Andrea Blume at 509-962-7069.
