They were both hard-working, tax-paying citizens with jobs.

4:32 PM? Mugged and stabbed in mid-afternoon, and not far from SPD East Precinct?

Capitol Hill, I think we may have a problem.

….charge attempted murder in all these bull shit cases and take the REAL bad people off the streets. You attack, rob, shoot, rape, murder….you don’t deserve to enjoy life with the rest of us. This country is wack compared to many as far as going light on hard core criminals.

It wasn’t that many years ago that somebody was stabbed to death on that side of the park in the early morning hours. Violent crime there is nothing new, thanks to this here awesomeness we know as Capitol Hill Seattle, it actually gets reported to the general population.

Hate seeing these stories, people out there are getting crazier and crazier.

My friend, a SPD officer for about 15 years advised me about a month ago to start wearing my gun. This coming from an officer who lives in seattle, liberal, and has worked East, South, and now downtown. He never used to carry when not on duty, now he always does. He’s seen a change in the scum, maybe its us getting older, or who knows, but it’s a sad commentary on our city to hear this from him, probably the most grounded gentle guy I know. If you didn’t know he was a cop, you would never guess by talking to him.

The city is soft, bet this dirtbag gets less than a year for trying to kill someone. Absolutely terrible.

I’d like to talk to your friend because SPD statistics — and, yes, federal stats too — say Seattle crime continues to drop.

“Seattle experienced 19 homicides in 2010, the lowest since 1956.”
“Major Crimes have decreased 6% when compared to 2009.”
http://www.seattle.gov/police/crime/

“Seattle also experienced decreases in violent and property crimes in 2010, according to the FBI statistics.”

So–two victims, both coincidentally 49 years old. The first one, at 12th and Howell was definitely a robbery, but then SeattleCrime says the stabbing may have been an acquaintance of the mugger who he ran into in the park. Is it possible he also knew victim no. 1, or was was it just a standard junkie-style mugging? Was he planning on meeting victim no. 2, or was that just serendipity? It seems like there’s more to the story that we know right now.

I’m glad the cops got him!

I agree, Tom. As JSeattle pointed out, crime is actually down in Seattle. But with blogs like CHS and SeattleCrime, we’re now instantly hyper-aware of everything going on in our neighborhood. This is a good thing (because information is good), but it can make us feel like there’s a constant high level of street crime going on. It’s important to have a sense of perspective — and the more normal people that are out and about in Capitol Hill, the less safe the area is for predatory types.

All the statistics in the world are meaningless if you are the guy with a knife sticking out of your chest, or a hatchet out of your head. Or if you’re asleep and some creep breaks into your house and cleans you out. I refuse to be a victim, and will follow my friends advice. Judged by 12 is always better than carried by 6.
