CHS Pics: Pilot Books leaves Broadway. No crying or you’ll get gonged

The small bookstore on the second floor of 219 Broadway Alley overflowed with friends of Pilot Books Sunday night. Party-goers were encouraged to read aloud from their favorite books in three rounds of two-minute readings throughout the night. Willie Fitzgerald, a Pilot volunteer who ran the events for the evening, discouraged sentimentality and said if any readers started to get weepy, they would get “gonged” and be asked to sit down. Pilot announced its closure last week after two years on Broadway. The party brought out Seattle literati as well as some writers whose books once sat on Pilot’s shelves, including Zachary Schomburg (author of Scary, No Scary and The Man Suit) and Brandon Scott Gorrell (author of During My Nervous Breakdown I Want a Biographer Present and editor of online culture magazine, Thought Catalog). Pilot Books owner Summer Robinson closed the night with a single line of poetry and then, not wanting to end on a sad note, followed with a reading from The Book of Penis. Thanks, Pilot. We’ll miss you.
